I have not been a member here for long. i enjoy writting stories and poetry, but i am struggling to compose at the moment. Words are not flowing as i would like. Any advice that people can give me would be great. Thank you.

3 things that have worked for me at various stages -

1- set yourself a small manageable amount to write each day - like 50 - 500 words depending on what you consider to be small.

2- just sit down and write something - anything. Doesn't matter if it's rubbish or makes sense or anything - just write.

3- Try popping along to the writers' exercises thread - 100 word writing challenges - brilliant for getting the juices flowing.

Maybe you have nothing to say.

We like to fool ourselves with the excuse that the words are blocked, but almost always our fund of ideas is depleted.

Welcome to the AH. :)

V gave excellent suggestions that have all helped me as well.

Check out the Kink Bingo in the Writers Challenges and Exercises forum.
It's a fun way to get the creative thoughts going.

This begs the question- where do you compose?

Computer? Change your medium. Sometimes paper and pencil are a damn sight better for playing with words. Write single words or phrases down as they come to you. You don't actually have to do anything with them, but they will be there and you will be making associations as you look at them.

A welcome  for the little newbie from the good little witch.

Another thing you can do (apart from V and Ken's suggestions [and Rob knows about stress]) is stop writing.

Reading is an extremely viable alternative. (so is walking, playing Sims XXIV (or whatever number it's on) drinking, staring out of the window, playing piano (guitar, whatever) or posting to threads)

{Spending hours looking on youtube for the goals v. Hartlepool is good too.}

Welcome to the AH.

What is this? British week?

Do whatever everyone else does; find a story you like and steal it.

Read. But don't read crap. Read real authors who use words the way strippers use men. (Hey! I just made that up!)

Listen to new music, following along with the lyric sheet. (Yeah, I know, that means actually buying the CD, but that's how musicians used to make their living, way back in the day when they actually could make a living...)

Have an affair with an unattractive, needy person. (If you, yourself, are an unattractive, needy person, perhaps someone else will follow this advice and you will be the beneficiary.)

Volunteer at a homeless shelter. Or teach nuns how to use the internet. Or learn to wax, at a salon near a college. Or join a life drawing class, (as long as they use models of your preferred gender.) Or combine all four of these activities into one. I've always wondered what a naked, waxed, homeless, college nun would look like, especially if she kept her funny hat on.

These are all techniques to stimulate your mind. Break out of your comfort zone, and then wait for your subconscious to reward you for it.

P.S. If you write a story about a nun getting waxed, I'll send you a quarter via Paypal.
