Recently I bought, by online auction, a couple of diamond rings. There were claimed to be worth about $US4500, which I took as total horse excreta.

Depending on what they looked like when they arrived, I planning on getting them valued and they'd be engagement/eternity rings (my original engagement was lost in a house break in years ago) or I'd offload them on Ebay if they were crap.

They arrived and certainly looked the part, although the stones were a little smaller than I was expecting, but no biggie.

The valuation came back last week and they are now off being resized (I've never bought a ring that didn't have to be made smaller - joys of having ring fingers between 4.5 and 4.75 in size)

One valued at just over $1000, the other just under $700.
I paid $350 the pair. I'm happy.

Anyone else jagged a good deal lately?

Anything I don't have to drive out and try and find personally is a good buy. My idea of shopping is to look it up on line, fill in the order form and let it come to me. Then, every six weeks or so, I lug the cardboard to the recycling center. Many shoppings, one trip. Love it!

My daughter wanted a pair of saddle shoes for school, and we looked in all the stores around here, even Stride Rite, but nobody had them. I ordered them from Shoebuy.com. They were around $45, but I ended up getting them for around $30 with the discounts they gave, and I also got free shipping. The shoes are really quite nice. They're even leather on the inside, and my daughter loves them.

I don't like internet shopping, except for books and things like that. How can you try something on when you buy it on the internet, or sit on it or hold it in your hand to test the weight, or do other things you need to do?

Yeah...

I got a new camera for 149.00 that would have cost 216.00 at Costco... and that was on sale.

Kudos to the Impster, who took the model number from me over the phone and found the better price.

I'm happy with my camera and happier with my taste in women.

I've been loving endless.com for shoes. Free overnight shipping and free return shipping if they don't fit. You just go to their site & print a postage-paid return label.

I ordered snow boots one afternoon. The next morning, I went to the grocery store. When I got home, the delivery was on my porch. They weren't kidding about the overnight part.

The prices are average, but I'm saving on sales tax & gasoline. Plus, the convenience is priceless to me these days.

I'm fearfully jealous - I have to try clothes and shoes before buying. I'm not an average shape and my feet are narrow. But I'm loving online shopping for other things, it's a godsend and saves a fortune in petrol - we live in a small rural community and any "special" shopping involves at least an 80 mile round trip.

If you know what you want there are some great buys online, but you must know what youre doing. Here's an example of what NOT TO DO.

I bought a rare book online for $139US, then discovered that the same book is published in my town and sells for $20US. In 2006 I did a little book selling, specializing in rare science books graduate students are hot to get. Then I discovered that students are notorious for ordering books, using them for research papers, then returning them for a refund.

The hell with that! I LIKE to go shopping! I enjoy comparing the different styles, feeling the different materials and putting together ensembles. I can do that for hours. My Amy on the other hand is in and out of Macy's in less than five minutes after buying 3 blouses - Criminal!

BTW Starr - I feel REALLY bad that you have to actually try clothes on because of your big beautiful boobs and nice skinny waist! Such trials! Oh yeah - I got a LOT of sympathy!
:D

(I can have big boobs and a skinny waist too - just not at the same time is all!) :(

Too true. Internet buying is definitely buyer beware territory.
The rings I got were worth less than half their claimed value, but five times more than I paid. I don't feel ripped off ;)

eta: Safe_Bet: Bite me! :p

I can't do much shopping for clothing through the internet since I'm so tall. Different brands vary so much that I really have to try them on.

For other items I like Overstock.com. Last year I bought a Lucien Piccard watch with a matching bracelet from there. Retail according to them was $395. I gave right at $35 for it and they offered free shipping then, too. My jeweler here in town took a link out to size it better for me for free. They were very impressed with the quality and astonished at the low price. I've purchased other items from them including my Titanium rings.

Anyone who hasn't discovered slickdeals dot net has missed out on a pretty cool site. It's a collection site of really good deals discovered and shared by users. Leans toward electronics a lot, but there are always really cool coupons for deep discounts on all kinds of stores. Check it out. I got a 2 GB micro SD card for my phone the other day for five bucks and free shipping.

I once SOLD a book with a face value of $4.95 for $90.00. It was an anthology, and apparently out of print, and it was the AUTHOR of one of the stories who bought it. Gotta love Ebay! ;)

I recently bought lots of baby stuff online using my Amazon GC from my Lit awards last year. A Moby wrap! Yay (so excited!) and a breast pump and a Jeep (yes Jeep!) diaper bag that isn't too girlie for hubbie to carry around... :cathappy:

retailmenot dot com is kinda cool, too. There's a Firefox add-on that will pop up coupon codes (shared by users) for sites when you visit them.

There is good and bad in the online buying.

I usually use one of those disposable prepaid credit cards so you can't get ripped off.

I bought some FireFox browser t-shirts, just to support a free browser that I thought was cool, they were great. Bought a pair of running shoes really cheap from one company, thought I got ripped off the sizes were different, but the company sent me the different size, that was great.

No taxes on internet stuffs. Bought a couple cartons of cigarettes tax free from a internet company, really cheap. They was stale and tasted like shit, and the company said no refunds so I threw them away.

Books, t-shirts, shoes. I have bought them all and been happy, but I wouldn't order some milk from China, or rice from Japan.

There is good and bad.

That's interesting, because my experience is that I must shop for clothing over the internet because I'm so tall. Retail stores don't carry anything remotely approaching my size, and if I want something that doesn't look like capris, I have to buy via net. Of course, I wear cheap stuff, so if you buy expensive clothes, I can see where that would be completely different. And just trying walking into any store and asking for shoes in American size 10.5 C. You can get 10, and you can get 11, but ask for 10.5, and they'll just laugh at you.

I love the net.
