Why do people sign up to be editors only to be non-responsive, unreasonably slow or you never hear from them again after submitting a piece?
Is it just me?

No, it's not just you. I'm sure most of them have good intentions of doing backup reads (I don't think many of them are really editors), but they lose interest or discover they really don't know how to do it, and there's no mechanism on this Web site for taking their names off the lists. It's all quite haphazard, with no quality control on it.

As others have said, you'll probably spin fewer wheels if you take notice of who is writing on themes you wish to write on and who you think is writing particularly well--and ask them if they'll do a backup read for you.

Actually, once you create (and get approved) your editor's profile, there is a way to disable it so it doesn't appear in the listing. I need to do that for myself, but I keep forgetting.

If I'm not mistaken, you can report people. The same way you can report a story or a post on the forum. I haven't been there in forever though, so this might not work now.

To the thread starter, try here.

And does anything happen then? Because my impression in seeing the volume of complaints on this is that whether or not you can delete yourself or be deleted as a VE, this isn't happening.

I haven't checked back to see if anything is done or not. My experience with threads or stories is that reporting works (in those cases). You might try and check if you're interested.

I'm not interested. Seems to be just spinning wheels. I did what some other people do--I found my own second reader by directly asking.

I've found the best response is just from putting a request in the forum. That way, people who peruse (who just might be editors, too) see them on the Main Forums list and investigate.

I've never used the other method (though I've read the complaints), but I've asked for help 3 times and people have always responded to each request.

Just a thought there. Also... some of the people who used to respond have left the forum.

*sigh*

But at least one who left recently in a huff and pulled her few stories here off the site flipped right back, so it seems to be a revolving door. :D

Yes, I am noticing that, too. I guess this place is ever changing and mutating. It's different than it was 6 months ago and 6 months from now it will have changed, too.

Some people you thought were constants leave, and some you thought were gone forever return.

Hmmm... I think I need more rum tonight.

The only constant around here is change itself. You get used to that after a while and don't take people being her for granted. As much as it may not seem like it at times, we all have lives outside of the forums.

I found my editor the old fashioned way. I met someone who became a friend and just happens to be a good editor as well. I was writing and needed an editor. She offered to take on whatever projects I needed done and the rest is history.

Don't go down to the store to get it or we'll think you've left for good. :D
