No joke....my dog was sprayed 3 times last yr. Nothing makes the smell go away completely, but my local hardware store said they supply a pet parlor place with the summer's eve exactly for that use....It seemed to work just as well as anything else we tried. Good Luck!!

Well when no guns are around the flat edge of a shovel will work.
Tomato juice maybe? Just don't make the dog feel bad it wasn't his fault.

Man, thank God my plans changed today. I was going to give her her last bath until next summer. Looks like she might get a few. I heard of tomato juice only, but I think I have to do that several times. I don't know.
Skunk Smell Remover
1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
2 tbsp Dish Detergent. The stuff for washing dishes in the sink, not something for dishwashers.
Mix the ingredients in a large bowl, because it will boil up like Vesuvius. We are, after all, making an oxygen generator. Wash the dog with this while it is still foaming, because it is the oxygen which reacts with the thiols in the skunk stink to neutralize the odor. If it sits around, it will loose it's efficacy because the oxygen boils off. Don't try to store it in an airtight container, because it will blow up. The brew also works for clothes, humans and unlucky cats.

Nah, she still got her treat when she came inside. I just threw it up in the air this time and ran the other way.

I'm saving this. I've been lucky so far with the dogs. I'm afraid it's only a matter of time since our neighborhood seems to be a skunk haven.

I just remembered that I have an in-home meeting tomorrow at noon, and I won't be able to get it done until afterward. Oh.My.God!
That's ok. Actually, if you let it "age", the smell is easier to remove. But I hear you.

DRAG! Our male got skunked and it was aweful. Smelled like something was on fire in the house. A groomer used an degreaser and it was mostly OK unless he got wet.

A note of caution: all skunk smell removers work to some degree. Problem is, even though you won't smell it anymore, your friends, family, and co-workers will know about your dog's adventures for some time to come.
Bring Fabreeze with you everywhere you go.
And expect it to be worse when its humid or raining for about two weeks. Moisture releases and activates the stinky chemical.

I am not sure about skunks, as what Suzie and Laila said, though go to Pet Smart. Pick up some Nature's Miracle. It used to work on my cat and I tell ya, cat urine is hard to get out. This is to put in your house, not the dog.

Bring your dog to your groomer. Drop her off and pick her up later, clean and smelling pretty.
If you insist on doing this yourself than Tomato Juice works well, but honestly, it's a 2 day process.
This is how I do it ...
Go buy a few cans of tomato juice (you should always have them handy for just this reason).
I will lightly spray my dog down with the hose, let him shake off a bit and then pour tomato juice over him. I'll massage it through his coat (just like you do when you shampoo your hair) and let it set for a few minutes. Rinse ... repeat ... and that should get rid of 80% of the smell.
5 minutes later, I return and hose him down again a bit and pour some more tomato juice over him again. This time I let it sit, dry through his coat and leave it in for a day.
The next day I will clean him throughly.
That should do it.

Well, I just tried this. Both dogs got skunked AAAAARRRRRGGGGGG!!!!!!I've seen & smelled the after effects of the hydrogen peroxide/baking soda/dish soap recipe. It worked!
Recipe #1:
* 1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
* 1/4 cup Baking Soda
* 1 teaspoon liquid soap
Mix in a bucket (it will fizz).
Soak your dog's fur, but be careful not to get any in his eyes.
Use a sponge to clean off his head and around his eyes.
Knead solution into the fur and be sure to get every part of him with it.

Not to be depressing here, but when I was a kid my dog would hunt (successfully) skunks every fall evening when it was foggy. He was an outside dog who stayed on the porch.
On those mornings before my feet ever hit the floor to get ready for school, I knew what he'd been doing the night before. That smell will seep right thru/under/around the door into the house.
