I'm a Democrat, and I hunt. Hate to break this to you, but banning guns isn't really the issue for progressives that most conservatives think it is. We'd much rather work on creating a more open, inclusive society that ensures basic rights and services for EVERYONE, rather than for the pious or wealthy.

Yup, I like my guns as much as anyone else. But I don't see why anyone needs a tripod mounted 50 caliber machine gun on their roof.

I think having a nuclear weapon would be cool too. I'm going to start building a silo in my back yard next week. I'll use it to coerce my neighbors to paint their houses to be a complimentary color to mine.

No, seriously, I agree. I don't have a problem with guns, I have a problem with giving civilians access to military-grade munitions, plus allowing them carte-blanche to use those firearms where and how they please. It's never about the Joes who just wanna get their buck every fall, it's always the motherfuckers who are secretly jonesing to kill somebody.

You know, Memphis_Man, small arms are not really much use in defending your "freedom" however defined. Can you see any realistic scenario where you might use them to resist the sheriff, or the tax collector, or the National Guard, or the ATF, and get away with your life and freedom? I collect guns, I have my great grandfathers guns....they are SPECIAL to me! I hunt, I fish and my guns are in my home for protection! I also have a permit to carry a concealed weapon! The reason? To protect myself from the fools with stolen guns, gang members, thugs, home invasions....taking guns away from innocent people would only give the bad guys the upper hand since you know they will not comply with any law!
The constitution says WE have the right to bear arms.....and with the republicans I know that WILL continue!
Stamp collectors' stamps are special to them, but they don't demand stamp collecting be made a constitutional right or anything.
If guns are outlawed . . . then outlaws can be arrested just for having them! Very convenient for the police, and for you and for me.
Based on international experience, guns make the community safer when and only when the police are, for the most part, the only ones who have them. As in Japan and Britain, where the homicide rates are significantly lower than here.
I must admit I'm of two minds about the whole thing. If guns are outlawed, how will we shoot the capitalists?!
But I just don't see why gun ownership belongs in the Constitution, right up there with freedom of speech and press and religion.
The Second Amendment should be repealed. I'm not endorsing any particular program of gun control, I just think this should be an ordinary political issue to be decided in the ordinary legislative arena, with no constitutional protections attached.Similar threads
