So I have been reading a book, ''eat, pray love'' by Elizabeth Gilbert.

It follows a womans travels round italy, India and Bali in her search for answers to just about everything.
Whilst she is in Italy, she meets someone who tells that everything and everyone has a word. One word that encapsulates all they stand for, their values, their personality, their essence....who they are.

For example her friend Luca tells her that every city has a single word that defines it, that identifies most people who live there.

"...if you could read people's thoughts as they were passing you on the streets of any given place, you would discover that most of them are thinking the same thought. Whatever that majority thought might be- that is the word of the city. And if your personal word does not match the word of the city, then you don't really belong there."

According to Luca, SEX was Rome's word and for the Vatican it is POWER. In New York City the word is ACHIEVE, in Stockholm its CONFORM, in Naples it is FIGHT

After a long search the author finds her word - Antevasin, is a Sanskrit word, it means "one who lives at the borders." Apparently it originally referred to people who chose to leave the safety of their homes and venture out to the edge of the forest where the spirits dwelt, in order to uncover the answers to the sacred in their lives. In Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert describes it as " living on that shimmering line between your old thinking and your new understanding."

Just as the author was at one point, still searching for her word, I am still trying to find mine. I'll post it as soon as I realise it.....

So no cheating...in one word and one word only.....what is your word?

Is this the woman who met a guy in Bali who seduced her by (from fuzzy memory of the interview I saw) telling her to come to his bed or something similar, which she obeyed without question and then later married him?

I've tried to think what my word is, but the only word in my head right now is 'Chocolate'

Darn it, minx! Now I'm going to be thinking about this for days while I try to figure out my word. I'll have to get back to y'all on this one.

*giggles* I know!

I've been trying to think of mine since I first read it....weeks ago!

Finding a few is easy.......but just one. One that completely encapsulates you, now thats much more difficult

I kind of went with the "first word in my head when I really think about it" or more accurately feel it. I was debating looking up some non-english words (I've got a few russian / portuguese / italian dictionaries) but when I looked out the window, its hit me. I'm always looking beyond, wanting to know what's "over there". Part Marco Polo, part DaVinci, part Mark twain, it just seemed fitting to go with "horizon".

Plus with a nice bit of a twist it leads to "horizontal" ;)

Damn. Clever. *grins*

Thats so cool, I hope my word just comes to me like that.

I wanna feel it

Love

I thought about "happiness" but I think love fits better because when I think about what happiness means to me it boils down to love. Love is what makes my world go round. it's what makes me so happy and giddy all of the time. It's what I fight and struggle for.

It sounds so cheezey.

Yep, if she is one and the same....she was on Oprah a couple of years ago now I think and if memory serves me right she was told by someone spiritual or something that she would meet an amazing man in Bali who would change her life and he was supposedly the man.

As to my word, it has been 'freedom' for at least 15 years or so now. Not sure I can perfectly match it to any city or place, but it has existed within me.

Create

even if it's something kind of dumb and commercial I need to make stuff to go forward

I've never lived somewhere it didn't work out, there's a place for it wherever I've been.

Create is me, too. Whatever I'm doing, it's usually about making something....music, art, food, home, sex...creation is the heart of just about everything that makes me me. (Even chaos, now & then.)

Question.

I was sitting here wondering and pondering, thinking that I had no clue, and that such a search has been the undercurrent of my entire existence. Literally thinking, "Fuck, I have no clue whatsoever", and suddenly "Question" pops into my head. Done.

It is what I do, it's me. My natural state. I don't accept things on faith because I have no capacity for it. The only positive, is that on the rare instances when I get an answer that satisfies, I stay satisfied. I don't continue to question obssessively. And it does not connnote "test" either. I don't test my mates, for example, but I do question, I ask.

So, yeah, "Question" it is.

"Serenity" was the first word that came to mind, followed closely by "service."

Serenity is what I'm always trying to create. Peace, tranquility in this stressful world.

Service to my loved ones is one way I attempt to create it.

I am not always successful. Often I am overwhelmed by all I must do in a certain time period. It's good to remember this is what I have chosen in my life and why.
