I have bad grammar

As English is my second language, I have some problems with grammar too on occasion. Here's a basic reference that I sometimes use when i'm unsure of how to properly write stuff.

Well, you did a good job with your post. That's more than many can achieve.

English is my first language, and I still struggle with a few things.

I've used this site on occasion:

The original edition of William Strunk's The Elements of Style (<--- that's a link :D) is available online. It is 90 years old, and it doesn't contain William White's additions, but it's well worth looking at. And it does contain my favorite advice for writers:

Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. This requires not that the writer make all his sentences short, or that he avoid all detail and treat his subjects only in outline, but that every word tell.

The very best way to improve grammar is to read more.

There are general standards (posited by self appointed burghers) but absolutely no-one follows all the rules. (particularly if you want to sell rather than send in a term paper)

Exactly. Or as Mr. Strunk put it (I love this book :D):

It is an old observation that the best writers sometimes disregard the rules of rhetoric. When they do so, however, the reader will usually find in the sentence some compensating merit, attained at the cost of the violation. Unless he is certain of doing as well, he will probably do best to follow the rules. After he has learned, by their guidance, to write plain English adequate for everyday uses, let him look, for the secrets of style, to the study of the masters of literature.

Whatever you do, don't rely on grammarcheck. I leave it on, because it sometimes does spot things I miss, but most of what it finds fault with is correct.
