Copied stories

I’ve read somewhere about stories from LE ending up on other sites and I have discovered some of mine on other sites. I was surprised because they are chapters of a novella and I didn’t think that would happen. I wonder do these sites just come by and grab random stuff?

What happens about this copying? How does it affect me if I want to rework my novellas into a novel, or if I take the original of LE copyright and characters etc? Is it something to bothered about?

Thanks for any advice

There's several things to consider when your work is stolen.

The main thing is that they're infringing your copyright. There are two ways to look at this, one is that it's actually free advertising.. The other is that their site may be making money out of your story.

If you consider free advertising to be all gravy, then fine. If you don't like the fact that they don't have your permission, that's another thing entirely.

Some litizens say "As long as my name's on it, someone other than Lit making money doesn't really matter."

Laurel and Manu (the site owners), who are making money through advertising don't like other sites making use of their time and effort. (read 'your time and effort')

So if you don't like it then PM Laurel (you'll find a post of hers in the stickies at the top of the AH) and give her as much info as you can. I understand that she's been instrumental in having stealing sites closed down altogether.

As to the publishing question well... if a publisher is wiling to ignore electronic publishing before using your work then it doesn't really matter where on the web it's been published does it?

Thefts are common everywhere.

The late Molly Ivins stole material from Florence King.

I've seen my stories in several languages. My stories are all over the Internet, word for word, at sites I've never heard of before.

I figure that I'm grateful for the free publicity and plan to sue their asses if and when they make a movie from any of my stories and make millions of dollars.

"Brad Pitt! Yeah, you. Give me that script. This is my fucking story."

"Who are you? Security!"

"I'm Bostonfictionwriter. I wrote this."

"Oh, sorry, I didn't know it was stolen. Is there anything that I can do to make it up to you."

"Actually, there is just one thing..."

"So, Angelina, how do you like your lobster."

"It's good Freddie. Thank you for not putting my husband in jail for stealing your story."

"Yeah, I promised not to press charges so long as you come back to my hotel room to, uhm, read some of my other stories...while naked."

"Sure, no problem, Freddie."

See? There's always a happy ending when someone steals your story. Then, again, I write fiction and I make up my own happy endings.

What gauche said.

PM Laurel with the situation. Include links to the sites that have posted your stories without your permission.

Laurel does a solid job of taking care of the problem.

Right and if that doesn't work, we send out the Lit assassins and it's buckwheats for them. ;)

I guess gauche is right, it doesn't matter except I thought that here you could control whether your story was on the site, have it deleted etc. My story started out as one thing, 60,000 words later it is something else and I wondered if reworked it could be something else again, but not if the original is out there for good.

Thanks for the advice. I will pm Laurel. Though I prefer the assassins option.

Don't lose heart, there are a large number of AH regulars that have actually sold stories for print that were posted at Lit first.

I have a couple or three stories that are in print (for charity or just a copy for payment) and these are all still posted here.

Thanks! And I guess it really doesn't matter as I am having the best time writing here.

Laughing -

Besides me? ;)

Um - I mean - you'd better talk to serpentmoon.

Actually, serpentmoon, which site is it? You can post the link here. We'll all go check them out. They may have stolen more than just your work.

Excuse me if i mess this up but here are the links - there may be more but I found this from a quick search on my characters' names, I'm sure this site must have other LE stuff because my story would not be the obvious choice!

Hmmm...

Good job on the links. :)

Damn - I hate this trend of using stories along with naked pics on blogs.

It's virtually impossible to search the site, it's a pain!

I hope Laurel can do something.

wondering when srplt will arrive to explain that we are all just fooling ourselves, and we have no copyright protection...

Welcome to AH, serpentmoon, ya gonna stick around? :)
I have a kink bingo card waiting for you...

Actually, we are protected under the copyright laws, as you well know. So long as we can prove we wrote it, and we can do that by the imprint on our computers, what we write is copyrighted for 20 years. Now, if you wanted to take it further, you could register everything you write with the Library of Congress.

Let's see, 550 stories at $20 each is, carry the one, $11,000.

I'll take my chances and I think my chances are good. Good luck to whoever steals my material because if I see if published somewhere, I can sue them.

You can argue that point with srplt... foreverandeverandever... :D

You want to try the bingo game, Boston? You'll get a blackout in no time!

Bingo? What's the bingo game about?

I have no luck, although I never lost at Blackjack and I did win 42 million in the lottery, but aside from that...I have no luck (lol).

Insult to injury! I only just noticed that the text of the story has been altered, its less obvious in the links I sent yesterday but still there. In this one it is really obvious they have added what I guess are key search words. It's sort of funny I put the added words inside ** but I may have missed some. OK definitely Lit assassins now!

It was early, not long past dawn, and most of the city was still in bed. Koios struggled to hide a yawn as he waited for the Dragon Lord's instructions. Sometimes he doubted that his master slept at all. But he knew that to be summoned this early meant the Dragon *xxx sex videos scandal* had something particular on his mind.

Something was happening. Koios was both intrigued and annoyed that he had no idea *vida guerra sex video* it was. His only clue the ring found by old Phobos. As the Dragon Lord settled back in his chair, Koios quickly told what had *jessica hahn and jimmy bakker sex scandal* discovered.

"The ring was stolen from the merchant, Lycurgus, about two weeks ago. On the second night of the quarter moon." He paused but the Dragon Lord said nothing. "It was taken by a petty thief a man named Kostas and sold on to Phobos by *his indian sex scandal download Kostas video sexy girl* disappeared, but from what the *hoang thuy linh sex video* says the house was chosen at random. We are searching for him. If he is in the city he will be found."
The Dragon Lord nodded. For a while he sat in silence, head bent. When *free teacher sex movies* looked up his face gave nothing away. "Lycurgus. He's a particular devotee of the arena, I believe."

Koios smiled *arabic movies sex* his master's choice of words. "Yes, he is an avid follower. His wife does not approve."

"As *I nude amateur sex videos* the Dragon Lord nodded. "The Islander knight, I hear he has not shown himself particularly willing to do our bidding."

Koios was startled by the change of subject. "The Lady Ianthe was well pleased with their work." He saw his master's face and hurried to admit. "The younger man has shown a *video sexy gratuit* arrogance and a reluctance to dirty his hands, but the other one has no problem serving as you instruct. Ismene says they have argued over it."

And so it continues...

Interesting....

I was just doing a google of my name and came up with the same sight that has taken one of mine and mangled the text horribly...scum suckers.

The blog is on google blogger and there is a procedure to get your stuff removed but it a pain...you have to snail mail the form to them!

That's the link...it's a big add for bullshit porn, but if you click on any of the movies...glad I have Firefox, as it detects that the site that is reference is a site that want's to download malicious software. Scumbags.

Those porn "blog" sites are mostly vehicles for malware or gateways to expensive porn sites. They steal Lit stories and scatter the text through the pages to try to keep search engines from ignoring them.

If you decide to check a place where a google search finds what you believe is your story on something with the word "blog" in the title/url anywhere, proceed with caution.

Make sure you have a robust set of anti-malware & antivirus programs up and running, use Firefox to view the pages ( About all I use FF for except to keep my other pen name logged in to Lit ) Make sure your flash and all other browser addons/plug-ins are up to date, and ditto for your OS.

Bump everything up to max security before you go, too. That should disable all the scripting languages and help keep things from launching.

Can you tell I had to spend quite some time helping a reader clean out his computer when he checked one of these sites, trying to do me a favor and report someone posting my stuff elsewhere? ;)
