Admit it, pervs: This is what you've been waiting for.

It's actually very chaste, and lovely.

Rather than scatter all our Olympics celebrations and emotion-sharing across a smorgasbord of thread, perhaps folks will find having a central one to be useful.

Let the games begin!

Help! In the Olympics opening ceremonies there was this drop-dead gorgeous Mexican woman athlete who carried herself like something between Princess Grace and an awesome supermodel - perhaps a bit shy, certainly awesomely classy and elegant. She had buzz-cut dark hair and I think she was tall. WHO IS SHE? Wow! I spent 25 minutes searching and could not find squat on "Mexico women 2008 olympics" etc.

Ham Murabi in GB says she is Juanita Corberon. Google comes up completely blank! :(

Put this alongside 1984 L.A. ceremony in a football stadium with 1,000 Elvises and you kind of start to see why the Chinese view themselves as the real center of civilization on this planet.

(OK, we're a young country, and still have some teenage boorishness. )

Actually, although a spectacular display in an artistic sense, I found it ridiculously pretentious. I think it detracts from the focus of the games. I'd pay to see the performance, just as I would Cirque du Soleil, but I really don't want it served with my Olympics.

I mentioned a Cirque du Soleil similarity to the family while we were watching it.

I think opening ceremonies are always pretentious and with the exception of Elvis, glamorous artsy fartsy.

A valid point. Context is important - it would be unreasonable to expect China to hold back from making a statement on many fronts - cultural, political, economic and artistic. They certainly covered all the bases with this - including artistic.

Did you see the Albertville opening ceremonies? That was some serious Cirque de Soleil weirdness. China's got nothing on them. :D

Excuse me! I don't think the Elvises were "boorishness" or teenage either. I think they were spot on in the spirit of L.A. in not taking itself too seriously--and not taking the games so god damn seriously either. I remember those games and L.A. had FUN! It was relaxed, friendly, joyous; it emphasized the idea of cheering on all the athletes and creating a spirit of unity and welcome for the world. People had such a good time they actually went "awww noooo!" when the Olympic announcer said the games had to come to an end.

Those were the true *spirit* of the Olympics. Not a presentation meant to dazzle and, yes, intimidate and prove to the world who has the most people who can march in sync and the most impressive tec. Yes, China put on a beautiful circus, also pretentious, self-centered, ignoring entirely the "We are the world" theme (where was that? Did you see it, cause I didn't). It had no sense of fun, of humanity, of brotherhood. I'd even go so far as to call it boastful--or did you miss the astronauts at the end taking over the globe?

My vote would be for 1,000 Elvises over that any day of the week.

Second that motion! I went to the L.A. Olympics and it was a ball. All the businesses went on flex time so that the traffic was reduced, we (SoCal) turned a profit on the deal, everyone was laid back and cool. It was SoCal at it's best rather than China at its most overbearing. Go Elvis . . . and all the break-dancers at the closing.

*approaches lectern (again!), fiddles notes, cleans glasses*

Ahem!

Without wanting to put too fine a point on things, holding the Olympics with clothed athletes is a modern perversion. During the entirety of the Classical Olympics, all competition was done nude. This was also true for the Heran Games, a lesser known but still important rite, that was held in Sparta for the Spartan women. I say, let us return to the Olde Wayes.

Thenk yew.

Does that mean we also kill any women who dare to look at the games?

Interesting Tidbit: Some Estonian guy wrestled a Finn for 11 hours in Greco-Roman wrastling back in 1912.

Wow.

Hows about that 600 foot long LCD screen? Eh? EH?

In the interest of good economics, separate games for men and women are wasteful. Let's combine them and call an Olympic truce in the War Between the Sexes. Besides, then we can require all the spectators to come nude, too.

As a nudist, I don't consider this porn. :)

I'm boycotting the olympics due to China's multiple and egregious human rights and civil liberties violations.

I am too.....I am very unhappy that our President went there.....they deserve nothing......

Hmmmm well I did find the opening ceremonies aesthetically pleasing, though perhaps a touch over the top. The martial artists were quite impressive.

Currently watching the team swimming, and wow are the Chinese girls cute :D

never mind.....

Looks like I missed alot of the opening last night.

A high school in my area is performing for the United States at the games. I didn't really think about how amazing this honor is until the games started. lol, and they start their summer band camp in a week. Crazy.
