Beijing Olympics: Colossal fuck up?

I will be the first to admit I don't know how they make the actual decision on who gets to host the games. I wonder who else they were up against? I can understand the games wanting to include as many countries as possible. But - this is just bullshit...

A lot goes into it. They take a list of cities that want to do it, look at who can be ready in time, who will have the best facilities, who has hosted in the past, a lot of different things. It's not supposed to be political at all and I think that's why China was picked. To show that it's not political.

At least there won't be too much of a mark up in shipping costs, for the souvenirs. Wonder what will be the big seller, masks or bottled oxygen?

i do hope that's sarcasm...

of course it is political...

it always has been.

it is also a business, be it a franchise...
and elitist.

the modern games started as a damned promotion...

please....!!!

It's hard to believe that even the Chinese thought it was a good idea.

(Rewind back to one of the early planning meetings...)

Mr. Long Wang: "It will be wonderful opportunity to dispray Great Society....People come from all over the world.....and.....many will desire to see our......uh.....facirities.....uh..........................Okay, fuck it......"

What the fuck, guy? Juvenile "ching-chong" humor from you and not Killswitch? Not funny.

You're better than this, show some damn respect.

"Me love you long time, me so hooooorny....bay bee".

I just saw a pretty recent picture of Beijing on TV, and the smog was so bad, it looked like people were walking through fog. Even if they shut the entire city and surrounding country down for the Olympics, I can't imagine THAT will clear up anytime soon. I think it's a fiasco in the making. I hope I'm wrong, but I fear I'm not...:(

I vaguely remember something about the last winter games in Canada. Someone was mad because it had not been that many years since Canada had hosted them or something...

But to say it's not political - well that's just silly. Nobody believes that - no matter how many times they say it.

Between the human rights violations, the freedom of the press issues and the environment related health concerns, this Olympics is turning out to be a bad bad joke.

What else can go wrong between now and the end of the games?

I thought it was a terrible idea from the get go.

i believe it.

and frankly, i can't believe what's been said by so many in this thread.

the ioc decides based on what's best for the ioc. they've to loyalty to any nation or ideology. politics come into play only insofar as how they affect the games, they would avoid a wartorn region, for example.

not picking on you, at all. i love politics, the arguing and bitching. the strategy and streetfighting, the pr. i love the hope and even the cynicism.

but goddamn it. not everything on earth is about that.

We'd have gotten the damn thing if Sheldon Silver hadn't put the kibosh on the West Side Stadium.

I think the better term is corrupt. The IOC members are treated quite well with slick hands as they evaluate sites/plans etc. I think things are better but it's tinged with temptations.

Well I believe the intent is to be non-political. But that is not how it plays out.

silver's a half a douche, but i'm not sure we can lay this on him.
The image of NYC hosting makes my mind a scary place. It'd be quite a feat, challenge is good though.

Totally aside, I just love the word kibosh, it's a good one. I need to work that into my vocab more often.

Olympic athletes compete for their nations, and events are climaxed by a display of the winner's flag and the playing of his national anthem. You don't have to be Josef Goebbels to know this is an inherently political exercise, one reason why the Olympics matters a lot less to me now than it used to.

explain calgary, atlanta, lilhammer, seoul, london... all of them.

how it looks this year, to you, isn't enough to make that judgement.
politics affects everything, that doeswn't make everything political.

how so?
we have the infrastructure, the space, everything. i can think of you few places that make as much sense, and none that make more.

I agree with you but I'm glad I have the naivety (sp?) to suspend politics for a few weeks.

One thing that bugs me is that these athletes are kids. When did that happen?

I'm not slamming NYC, it's my mind that can't handle the sheer numbers of people and car -- the sea of humanity.

ah, the crowds, as in, we have too many already. this is true, but build up for three months, then two weeks of madness, then three weeks of rollout, all once in a lifetime? we can take it.
