Between the human rights violations, the freedom of the press issues and the environment related health concerns, this Olympics is turning out to be a bad bad joke.

What else can go wrong between now and the end of the games?

Thats just the media perpetuating negativity. Just focus in on the positives. Like for one rooting the U.S.A. Fuck what the haters say.

But just remember
Wer'e getting it cheap
Gotta put up with a bit for that.

Cry once when you pay for it, or cry every time you use it:rolleyes:

I still can't believe China is hosting the olympics...

who in the world thought that was a good idea?

ferfuckssake

I've always been one of those 'over the top' fan of the Olympics and I certainly hope it's a safe event but I just do not why China was even on any list of consideration.

I'm definitely look forward to the games, the spirit and uniqueness of it all, I just wish it wasn't in China.

They were in line to get the 2000 Games, and then Tianenman Square happened. We might have been better off having them 8 years ago, when the pollution, while still horrific, wasn't as bad as it is now.

Everyone knew it was a repressive regime ahead of time, but I think the IOC at least believed they would get the air quality under control. I don't know how elite athletes can be expected to compete in the environmental equivalent of the tailpipe of a '72 Mustang.

Jeremy Shaap was reporting from there today and said you can feel the crap in the air getting into your lungs.

Olympic athletes have a very short window to make their mark. I would be extremely pissed if I spent my life preparing for the olympic stage only to have my performance harmed by the environment I was participating in. How many records won't be broken because of air quality?

Plus the two top chinese gymist girls are 2 years under age for competition. They have docs that claim they are 16,but everyone knows they are only 14.

So many events are not in Beijing due to the air quality. Spreading events is fine, and happens often, but this is -- this is akin to negligence.

Chinese authorities have promised freedom for foreign news organizations in the country during the Olympics. But many have met with problems, including authorities cutting off live broadcasts, restrictions on reporters' movement and coverage, and Internet censorship imposed on journalists.

The very idea that freedom is promised is like a bullet right between the eyes. Promise? Just wow.

I think the real question is; exactly how corrupt is the IOC? Are we talking Tammany Hall, Dick Cheney...what level are those crazy kids at?

It's hard to believe that even the Chinese thought it was a good idea.

(Rewind back to one of the early planning meetings...)

Mr. Long Wang: "It will be wonderful opportunity to dispray Great Society....People come from all over the world.....and.....many will desire to see our......uh.....facirities.....uh..........................Okay, fuck it......"

tried to address this...

characteristically
in a somewhat circumspect way.

the entire concept
of a western conceit... (i.e. the olympic movement)
transgresssing a culture
that struggles to remain...
non western
while embracing westernn trappings...

the culture clash alone is fascinating...

the failings of china on display... through a western lens
the magnificence of china as well...

the facilities are in place.
the willingness to provide the venue as well...

but the displacements to the citizenry,
production disruptions,
water rationing,
...

the forced opening of the internets beyond the usual censorship...

...

there are several genies loosed from bottles
in this olympics...

this does not even go to the
not so social
political potentialities
or terrorist ... opportunities(?)...

if china can pull this off
and emerge unscathed,
it will be a miracle

I hate that phrase. Seriously. It's just stupid. But so is the rest of your post.

"Forget all of the bad stuff! Just look at the waving American flag! Yeah, baby, yeah!!". I'd rather see the world for what it is, than through a red, white, and blue lens, thanks.

I will be the first to admit I don't know how they make the actual decision on who gets to host the games. I wonder who else they were up against? I can understand the games wanting to include as many countries as possible. But - this is just bullshit...
