Face or Figure?

I heard a very wise and beautiful French woman say once that when a woman reaches 40+, she has to make a decision between 'face or figure' in terms of appearance. (Or, nature somehow chooses for you, depending on your perspective.) For me, I seem to have a really good face that doesn't show a lot of age, but my figure is less than perfect.

This is a blog that I read about the subject:

40: Face or figure?

Way back when I was still young and in possession of all my collagen, I was out somewhere with a friend of mine and we saw a woman who must have about 40+. She was in gym gear, skinny. She obviously worked out a lot. Her body looked great but her face looked quite haggard, old. My friend said ‘you see, when you hit your 40’s, you have to choose: your face or your figure’.

Have you heard of this expression before? What she meant is that when you reach 40+, you could get thin, too thin, at the expense of your face. The thinner an older women gets, the more haggard she (can) looks. As you get older, you appear to need a bit of meat on your bones to plump up those lines.*

This might all sound like a whole lot of nonsense, but just have a look at the faces of women who are not stick-thin – they almost always have the most beautiful, unlined skin.

I remember thinking at the time “Bloody hell, what a fucking terrible choice!” I couldn’t think which one I would choose to give up. Face or figure? I wanted them both, dammit!

However, as I head perilously close to 40, it is becoming increasingly clear that the same fate awaits me. Something has got to give.

I have been feeling not-so-thin lately. The scale agrees. However, I keep getting remarks that I am looking thin; people asking me if I have lost weight. I couldn’t understand what the hell was going on. I am definitely not thin or thinner. Then I realized what it was. My ‘fat’ is slipping. My face and chest are getting thinner and my middle is getting rounder. Oh fabulous.

I have a very thin face, and if it gets too thin, I start looking really haggard. Which is not a terribly good look. And lets be honest here – staying stick-thin is a huge pain in the ass anyway, so I’ve decided ‘face’ it is. My mother is happy. She is forever telling me “Tertia, you need some meat on your bones!” But I think all mothers say that because I am most definitely not without some ‘meat’ on my bones. However, the time has come to choose. Face or figure. I think I am going to go with face. Sigh.

It is actually quite nice; this choosing ‘face’ thing. I’ve agonized over my extra few pounds for so long, it is quite nice to give myself permission to leave this bit of ‘meat’ on my (weary / old) bones. All for a good cause etc.

And you know, I have lots of time, because if 80 is the new 40, then 40 must be the new 20. Or whatever.

So, just to let you know. Face has won out over figure. YAY! Fuck gym, pass the wine.

My question is to both ladies and gents: Which is it: Face or figure? What attracts you most: a hot body or a gorgeous face? If someone doesn't have both, is it a deal-breaker?

I don't know about that...

I happen to know two women who are in their forties whose face and figure are both fantastic. My wife's face and figure were both excellent all through her late 50's.

As a matter of fact I know quite a few women in their forties and fifties who have beautiful bodies and stunningly beautiful faces.

Oh and judging yourself is probably not a fair assessment, as beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Good question.

I've never really had to choose, though. I've always been one of those girls who "could be really pretty if she'd lose 10, 20, 30 pounds," etc. I know what features should be accented, and which ones to try to camouflage if at all possible. Now, at 41, I look younger than many of my friends my age and younger. Krispy Kreme gets all the credit.

For choosing others, sexy isn't defined by a look, not anymore. Sexy is defined by intelligence, honor, bravery, sense of humor. If there's a body part that attracts me, it's not the face, or the figure. It's forearms. Show me a man in a dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up and I'm a goner!

If I HAD to choose body type, I'd choose someone with mileage showing. I like scars. Scars are interesting, and the stories behind them as well.

I haven't had the figure since I was in junior high. I think I had it for all of three months one summer (and a pink bikini to go with it). So here's hoping I can maintain the face because I've been trying all my adult life to do something about the figure and it's a lost cause ;)

For me its face. Figure has its attraction to be sure, and I'd be lying if there were not some instances of figures turning my head, but the interaction is always in the face. Its the wink, the smile, the tears, the dimples, the laugh lines, and the eyes, its always the eyes.

Eyes can be so magical.

:rose:I find this very reassuring, Zeb. Thanks for your insights!!

Your post makes me smile. :) I feel ya about the figure thing. I mean, I have nice breasts, and I'm in okay shape, but I'm not a beach bunny by anyone's standards. I don't think I ever was except for a minute or two during my senior year in high-school when I was starving myself to death.

Les, Les, Les. Naughty woman, you spend too much time looking at yourself from the fashion magazine's perspective. Just once in a while consider the male point of view. Heck, you of all people could adopt it. After all, I think Stella has. It isn't anything about vision, not really, it's all about function and the proper function of a woman's body is to act as a trampoline, at least to some degree. Without any bounce, how can you play?

:D:heart: You are so right, my man. So very right. And, the curves feel nice, oui?

Hard call when you really love someone. Face, is the deal breaker, though.

The trick is to get thin whilst still having a supply of collagen, then gain about a pound each year to "iron out" the wrinkles when they begin to appear.

Unfortunately, I didn't learn the trick until it was too late. I shrunk, but my skin didn't.

Mas oui, cheri, and if the lights are turned 'way down, feel becomes soooo important . . . especially in the heat and the humidity, bodies all sticky with sweat and perfumed with desire. Who, by then, is looking?

And? I kiss wrinkles with delight.

Ideally, a woman should have both a hot body and a gorgeous face. But frankly, a woman who likes to cook gets to me every time, whatever she looks like.

A lot of it also has to do with stress. The more stress one recieves, often the more gaunt a face looks. Want a prime example? Go look at military members. Most of the chiefs I've run across, that stress themselves out, look much older and have more wrinkles to them, than the ones whom handle things in stride.

DAMN! That's the same way I feel about men.

After I buzz-cut my post-retirement ponytail, I remember my daughter (by then a major) commenting "Now you really do look like a grizzled old sergeant-major." It may have been the nicest compliment I got that month!

When I was single, I used to go to strip joints and watch the women dance. I always went for the women with gorgeous faces and a lot of curves. In particular, I loved the ones with nice, full bottoms. Also, full-swung breasts were a major turn-on. But, bottom line: I always went for the facially beautiful ones most of all.

In 'real life,' I just love women. The face is still the key though. The body is secondary, but a nice bottom is always what gets to me. Mmmmm. Mmmmm. Mmmmm.

Bottoms are the best! But only by a little bit.

You're welcome. But I didn't really answer you question...

Eyes...then face...then body. If the eyes have smile winkles around them then she is a happy person and I would want to be around her. The face must have two eyes, a nose and a mouth and two ears. Hair color is not really important as it can be changed on a whim. Length doesn't matter either for the same reason, except going short will require going long will take some time. But a beautiful face to me my not be one to someone else. (I could email you some examples if you wish)

Body...I have had women of all types and sizes...I must confess I prefer small to medium breasts over large ones. She must have hips. A woman which has the same line down from her under arms to her feet with no curves, to me, is a man with boobs and no dick. Sorry but that is how I feel. A woman should have a noticeable waist and hips. She does not need to be the perfect measurements - 36-24-36 - but there should be a noticeable difference between her waist and hip measurements.

As for personality...a sense of humor (as noted by the smile wrinkles around the eyes earlier) some modicum of intelligence and be her own person not some shadow of someone else.

As for everything else...all the parts should work or be functional...but not necessarily to factory specifications.

I hope this helps.
