what do do in the philadelphia/mid lower eastern new york state area?

Okay we are trying to plan a few free days on the way back from Vermont and need some suggestions of things to see on the way back to philly via Albany/Oneonta NY interstate 88/81/476 route...

Any nice family attractions through there that anyone knows of? Or must see's in philly that would interest a toddler as well?

If you go through Jersey there is Six Flags: Great Adventure, the largest amusement park on the east coast. It's about a 90 minute drive from Philly, I think (I come from the other direction).

Upstate NY eh? There is a small Six Flags by Lake George. The worlds largest outlet mall is by Bear Mountain [Featuring such things as Sax, Bass, Nautica, etc etc]

Lake George and Ft Ticonderoga

Saratoga Springs will be in horse racing season till mid-fall

Or, if you prefer football, the season will be on, and Lincoln Financial is a rather new [less than 5yrs old] stadium. I also recommend NOT wearing anything related to the Dallas Cowboys or NY Giants whilst in Philly lol.

The Finger Lakes.... wine country... pick one of hundreds...

Watkins Glen.... a pretty cool glen when Nascar is not in town.

Corning Glass works.... A really neat museum....

If you're headed down the Jersy shore, you might consider crossing over to Staten Island and up to Saint George at the northern end of the island. Then take the Staten Island Ferry [it's free] up to Manhattan, past the statue of liberty. Once you get to Manhattan you can take a subway up and see the Empire State Building. The two big tourist attractions might be a tough sell to a toddler, but they're something to talk about for the rest of a life.

We will have to talk. But Keebler's on the money. Cooperstown (only about 20 to 30 minutes from Oneonta) and the Fingerlakes would be my pick. The wineries are marvelous.

It sounds to me like you might be passing through Scranton? They have a train museum that might be interesting if you have little kids who are into trains. At least they used to -- mine were the right age a long time ago.

If you are further east -- going south on 87 instead --- there's a Sesame Place (or at least there used to be) I think in New Jersey off of 287 -- again it's been awhile.

At the very west side of New Jersey off of Rte 80 there is the Land of Make Believe -- a very quaint little kiddy amusement park.

Further south in Pennsylvania is Hershey Park -- a big amusement park with a motel full of little kids. An experience not to be missed if only for the comical side of it. I remember walking through the halls at 11 or so and seeing parents in their pajamas sitting outside the rooms waiting for their children to FINALLLY fall asleep. Or one room with shrill voicesw chanting PIZZA! PIZZA! PIZZA!

Of course, Philadel,hia has the Liberty Bell, the Franklin Museum (a great place for children), the Betsy Ross house --

lol darlin I couldn't drag my hubby back to drive anywhere near that area unless we fly in and do the subway and buses and stay in the area. After our last drive through he's decided no matter what we are not driving there again!

On track...There's a really good zoo in philly, not sure the name of it but I know it's kick butt as I went to it when I was in school in Herhsey, PA. This is the website to the one I think I went to...

I checked the map again and we will be driving through scranton. We'll be going from 476 to 81/ to 88 over through albany and up to vermont.

the philly zoo is awesome im from philly wow there is a ton of stuff to do in philly really if ur into all the historical stull in center city go for it dont forget to get a cheesesteak and some pretzels to...also spirit of philadelhia is a nice lil cruise if u got time good place to eat on delaware ave is the moshula its an old ship frigen awesome place...the adventure aquarium is new in camdem u can pm me if u want

Ooooh! Ooooh! I know the answer to that one too!!!

I am sure it is not the only place... but just last weekend when visiting for the first time in years, I had a fabulous cheese steak at Amore Pizza, Old Baltimore Pike, in Newark, Delaware; about 5 minutes off of I-95.....

And it was every bit as good as I remember from years ago. To be fair, in that area (Southern PA/NJ and Northern Delaware) ("Flyers" country) it is hard to find one that is NOT great. I cannot explain why everywhere else in the world has trouble reproducing it!

And a word of advice.... do not worry about entertaining a "toddler"; THAT problem will be hard enough when the are adolescent teens!! Enjoy the opportunity while you have it.... most toddlers can be entertained with light switches for hours... or correctly identifying dogs and cats.

Go for stuff that will entertain you and where a toddler screaming will not embarass you too much.... (quiet art museums are probably not so good)

lol, oh darlin you haven't met my toddler. She has to have interesting stimulation. The light switch thing stopped working about the time she started taking things apart and putting them back together in rather interesting ways. The same child that had to go to the doctors with me for my bandage changes a few minutes ago to get her to stop going on about showing her my wounds. One set of stitches is a crocodile teeth shaped and the other two...''well they are just a mess and she needs to tell the doctor'' I should just take her to a medical museum she'd probably have a field day!

we promise to enjoy it either way and it won't be our only trip. We do try and do a mix of adult/toddler activities so everyone isn't bored out of their minds.
