Ghana, West Africa

I read "Coming from someone who would know" as you implying you were familiar with the area. Hint duly noted. I'd say a mix of European and American ancestry is exotic enough. :)

I meant you would know a spectacular body, since you see one in the mirror.

Thank you Knde

What is the predominant language spoken?
In Accra, everyone you come across will speak English. Or at least some semblance of English.
Some will speak pidgin (a form of broken English, think Jamaican patois). You don't have to speak it, to understand it though.

p.s. Waiting on the reply about foreign cuisine.

Oh and...

Oh and you should note that there is a difference between the "markets" and the "shops".
You can't haggle at the shops, but it's the norm at the markets. Don't go to the markets on your own, you will get ripped off. Simply because I have an accent, I get ripped off!

I found this guide to Pidgin English. If you are travelling all across the region, it'd come in handy to know what some words mean. Most of the terms mean the same thing from country to country.

ever been there?

In a few weeks I'll be there working....2 yr contract

I was there for a little over a year, volunteering for about 3 months, & when my placement ended I did freelance paid gigs. I was originally based in Accra, then ended up traveling to most of the regions. Do you know which region you'll be in? Will you be staying in your own house or sharing?

There were plenty of amenities in Accra (I-net cafes for keeping in touch with family, night clubs, regular infrastructure, restaurants particularly near to hotels and embassies, ect.)

I spent a lot of my early time there at my country's embassy feeling homesick, pissed off & malarial, but got acclimated after 3 1/2 months or so. I didn't want to leave when time came to go home.

There are a lot of different languages across the country...Three main dialects are based on Akan. If you learn a few phrases in Twi you'll be golden, people will appreciate it. The schools are English based so in the big cities people will address you in English.

Okay, Huskie, language lesson :

Ete sein? (how are you)
Ahyea (affirmative, fine)
May-dah-see (thank you)
Obruni ..loosely translates as "Whitey" Means foreigner. You'll hear it a lot, affectionately.

There were some language quirks too, like, calling someone "silly" was a grave insult. Most people in Ghana don't swear in English & I never learned any cuss words in Twi - so I'm not sure if it's cultural or just a consequence of colonial school English. I'm guessing you already know the left hand thing...

I like remembering these things. :) What else do you want to know?

Not sure about Mexican but there was a decent Italian restaurant in Accra close to the Russian embassy. There was also an AWESOME Jamaican-Rastafarian vegetarian restaurant downtown. Highly recommended. Called Jah Rah, I think?
I think Ghanaian food is pretty tasty too, when you find out what dishes you like.

A co-worker of mine that I almost fucked (but then she got pregnant from her b/f before we could schedule the day and hotel) is from there. As African countries go it it pretty nice and peaceful.

Well I'm sorry for your kidlets. You'll see, it'll go by superfast. Try to enjoy every moment.:rose:

Those black chicks are hot, they walk around with their tits hanging out! Fantastic

Lame. Go finish jerking off to your 1950 National Geographics.

Thank you, Knde and Evesdream, for representing the true facts and shine of a beautiful civilized country on the real.

Huskie, congrats, good luck and make the most of a great opportunity. Not too many people get a chance to step out of their closed boxes to really see the world, especially those places not listed in the typical hipster/tourist destination guidebooks. I went to Liberia twice as a child and had good, mind-enriching experiences there that opened up my world, even at a young age.

But don't they wear bones in their lips?? or through their noses?

Some of the sexiest women I've ever met, like my old student Phanta from Cote dIvoire, are from equatorial West Africa.

Ass---Tits---Lips

And I love the food that originated in that region (that's where soul food comes from).

But I can't deal with the climate.

This is wonderful news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11 :)

You'll go there a loony left liberal hippy.... and return a White Nationalist after spending time with these primitive savages and after being beaten, robbed and given all kinds of S.T.D's including the AIDS!! I guarantee you'll come home with racist views, mark my words! ;)

We could use more White Nationalists joining our growing movement as we're about to embark on a race war. Shhhh.... don't let anyone know though brother, it's top secret.

Look forward to welcoming you to our movement soon.
Sir Bollock.

I just knew this thread would devolve thanks to the inevitable postings of small boys with small minds such as the walking syphilis above. I knew it.
