I don't recall when I first had a peach, but it's always been my favorite summer fruit--unadulterated, ripe, yummy, slippery-juicy, peachy.

 But getting back to summer fruit....I like peaches just as they are, not cooked up in pies or cobblers; blackberries, however, are my favorite summer fruit cooked up in a pie or crisp.

So what are you favorites? And how do you like 'em?

Personally, I've always preferred a good ripe nectarine to a peach.

I adore a very ripe, deep red watermelon slice.

Strawberries grown locally and picked ripe are wonderful.

Mulberries are a delight but difficult to eat, because of the stems. Can't do it without getting very stained fingers.

Wild blueberries toward the end of summer.

I like nectarines better than peaches because (if you eat them rock-hard like I do) they're crunchy like apples. However, we bought some local peaches on a trip to Southern Illinois this past weekend and we've been eating them cut-up with blueberries and they're divine, and they make the kitchen smell fantastic. While on the trip we had peach upside-down cake, with pecans, and it was delicious. In general, peaches are too mushy for me, but as long as they're not overripe, I think I like them raw instead of cooked.

Blackberries are one of my favorites. I love all berries. Blackberries are just a little sour and I love to eat them straight off the bushes in my grandma's garden. They're wonderful mixed with peaches in a crisp, with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream. Summer fruits... mmmm

Ditto -- and I prefer 'em crisp, like Carson. Black plums, too.

Love green grapes -- love to freeze 'em, too. Like candy!

Cherries -- fresh. Don't care for 'em canned or other perversions. Ditto blueberries. Kiwi! I like most fruits on the firm & tangy side.

Cantaloupe -- either plain or with sea salt or even with a scoop of cottage cheese (LARGE curd and full fat) in the center.

Strawberries -- plain or with heavy cream or in smoothies.

Raisins (especially the bag of jumbo mixed variety) are my favorite fruit, though. (And raisin pie my favorite pie. And raisin-filled cookies my favorite cookie -- second is oatmeal-raisin. Get the picture?)

:)

raisins aren't a fruit. :D

If I had to pick one fruit ... just one, and it would be torture... but I think it would be fresh Bing cherries. Or apples... or red grapes...

sure they are, dried grapes.

I want to plant a fig tree. I love figs and fig preserves.

I make a mean citrus salsa that goes great with grilled fish from mangoes.

I agree with you, Carson, about hard nectarines! And I love plums, and peaches too.
But best of all, Apricots-- only, they have to be tree-ripened, and the goddamn fools that bought the house next door to my parents cut the tree down. It used to yield two or three bushels a summer, and these people thought it blocked their view.

I used to eat apricots from the time they were green and sour and only a little bit less hard than their pit, until I was picking up the least over-ripe ones off the ground. I loved every permutation of flavor in their cycle.

And avocados.

Blackberries and watermelon and plums.

My favorite summertime dessert for picnics and cook outs is a big fruit tray with grapes, watermelon, canteloupe, cherries, strawberries, and fresh pineapple and a bowl of angel dip in the center.

Angel dip is simply a small jar of marshmallow fluff and a brick of softened cream cheese (you can use lite) mixed together. I do it with a mixer so it's smooth. It's so great with fruit. Marshmallow fluff is fat free, you know. :D

I've also done the fruit tray and used lemon yogurt as the dip. It's yummy too.

My summer fruit is the raspberry, crabapple and the chokecherry.

Other worthwhile mentions are the saskatoon, blackberry, blueberry and the gooseberry.

A taste of Honey

A mango in the early tropical summer(November here) when it still has that extra tang . Yum.

reminds me of the ancient yarn:-

Young Australian "D'you know the difference between a woman and a mango?"

Old Australian "No mate, I've never eaten a mango"

Figs off the tree dripping with honey juice.

Black figs, glistening red, less sweet, refreshing.

White Peach, veined red; not so easy to find anymore.

Sintra strawberries - by far the best, and the earliest.

Nespra's - not sure how that translates - yellow plum sized with a glossy brown pip, sweet and tart at the same time - the first ripe fruit of the summer.

Cooked fruit - Banana flambe with homemade vanilla ice cream.

Best of all, is a yellow thick skinned peach so 'fluffy' it needs shaving, it's an old variety not grown commercially but crams the essence of peach into every mouthful.

Oh... and Mango. Mango sorbet, mango juice (my breakfast juice of choice)

Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.

I do not think that they will sing to me

When I was a kid fruits were common (Florida).

Blackberries. Bananas. Grapes. Tangerines and Navel oranges. Guava. Watermelon. Pears. Wild plums. Surinam cherries. Mulberries. Japanese plums.

I read a newspaper article from 1867 about Tampa. The writer said that food was so plentiful here only lazy people starved. It was true when I was a kid. You could get all the oysters, crabs, and mullet you wanted.

NEOLYTE The photo of the wikipedia loquat doesnt look like any loquat I've ever seen. The print beneath it looks like real loquats.

Oh yes, I forgot black plums. One of my all time favorites. There is nothing like a black plum that is so ripe the juice just bursts out when you bite into the skin.

Can you pm with the recipe please! That sounds AWESOME!

My favourite summer fruit is definitely blackberries...or strawberries! Actually, all fresh summer berries are my favourite..

I do, however, also love a watermelon that is so succulent and juicy that it dribbles down your chin when you bite into it and it's sweetness melts into your mouth.

"I love peaches, I could eat a peach for hours," anyone remember where THAT line is from? ;)
