What will it take to convince all the Republicans in America who are fed up with George W Bush and his big, bigger and biggest Government policies and his war against civil liberties, to vote for Libertarian candidate Bob Barr?

We need to get some Republicans fired up for Bob Barr. Especially in Florida... Texas... lol.

It's a pity I don't live out there, I would get out and walk Republican precincts for Barr.

That's a fucking fantastic idea! he could be the Republican Ralph Nader!

GO BOB!

I'm with you, man. Republicans deserve to get voted the hell out in November. I guarantee we'll hear moaning and trembling about how Obama is for big government from the same people who have supported Bush for eight years as he great the government at record rates.

I'd vote for Barr if I knew for a certainty it would throw the election to Obama, even though I agree McCain is marginally better than Obama.

Just what we need, another Perot

Nah! He ain't got the bucks. Hell, until Le Jac posted this, I'd never even heard of Bob Barr. And no one else will either, I suspect. The problem with Libertarian Party members is that they don't trust each other any more than they do the government. Possibly with good reason . . .

My brother-in-law's an official Libertarian. Most self-centered, greediest, exploitive so-and-so I ever met.

Just to make you feel better, Bush is not running this year.

I don't know how that thought makes LJ feel, but it makes me wanna
dance :nana: dance :nana: dance :nana:

And I do so agree with Stella (always a safe move) may BoBarr become the GOP's Nader. :D

Rumple Foreskin

I doubt Barr will hurt McCain because the Republicans who are too hardcore to bring themselves to vote for him probably wouldn't do so anyway. John's hope will be winning 80% of the Republican vote (assuming a "full" turnout), then adding enough Independent & Democratic to swing the election. It seems like a long shot, but we'll see.

*tongue in cheek*

Bob Barr doesn't need the big bucks - he just needs a catchy mascot. Say, someone who looks like Ayn Rand but whose name is Lizzy Fair... :D

I dont think even God can save the Democrats from Michelle Obama. The GOP will find a way to push her buttons, so make plenty of popcorn.

Just remember, Perot was responsible for the Clinton years.

I've heard of Bob Barr. He's a MAJOR slimebag, formerly a Republican Rep. from Georgia. Bob Barr's responsible for the so-called "Defense of Marriage Act," which was a spearhead for the Christian fascists to band together to prevent gay marriage. Bob had gone through three wives by the age of 50 (I think he's 55 now), and a lot of his buddies on Capital Hill used to kid him about "Gee, Bob, which marriage are you defending now?"

Bob's also spoken out about how we shouldn't allow freedom of religion if he doesn't like the religion and is generally a pimple on the backside of humanity. I think that he'll fit in really well in Texas.

There are two good web pages about Barr's lack of qualifications as a libertarian: this one and this one. Some libertarians may find him acceptable, but I think his record does a good job of showing he's just a small-town Christian bigot and we've got far too many of those in the world already. I say "Fuck him with a chainsaw."

I've got a cousin who was Republican for the longest time but is now calling himself a Libertarian, probably because the Republicans were too liberal. I'm really disappointed in him: he was brought up to give to charities, give back to the community, and generally take the attitude that we can't exist without each other's help. And this family can really afford to take this attitude, believe me, so why he's feeling selfish and mine mine mine is a mystery to us all.

Oh that's perfectly logical, in his mind.

You see, he probably envisions a world where, say, the permanently disabled survive by running around begging charity or by draining their own family's finances. If you're a single mom, go beg at the church for your survival, or start turning tricks (after all, in Libertaria, it's legal). If you're disabled with no immediate family (separated by, say, a natural disaster), there's plenty of orphanages that'll take you... and sell you to a lab or two...

Actually, those webpages speak rather well of his record as a Libertarian, but if he is opposed to gay marriage and freedom of religion, those would both be deal breakers.

I believe that may be true, but he comes from more money than he can spend and generous parents and generous grandparents, so I think it's particularly cheap and selfish for him to take the attitude of "I've got mine; screw you for being weak."

Well that's the whole attitude of the rich, typically. He's not all that uncommon among the wealthy.

My wife and I are looked down on sometimes as the "poor rich" people because we can't get with the program - hoard it, hoard it, and hoard it some more, and feed upon those who couldn't strike it rich like us. Lots of these people got where they're at by stepping on others to get to the top. But who do they come to for their insurance and asset protection needs? Us. Why? Because we won't do to them what they do to others.

Your family, in my experience, is a minority of rich families out there.

Are there enough true republicans (or rather, true libertarians) to make a difference?

There are. But since their central tenet is under no circumstances act in concert with others they can't organize themselves well enough to do so.

They also spend a lot of time arguing about who should be in charge. ;)

True Republcans? Yes, but we are voting for McCain because he beats the hell out of the alternative even if he wasn't our first choice.

It would seem so. My family's had money for a loooooong time and we have four or five generations of giving money and not believing that money made us better people. We've just got money, which is a Nice Thing, but we're still expected to earn our way in society and do the right things. I didn't even know we HAD money until I was in my teens. I don't have enough to retire on, thanks to me letting my ex-wife spend everything I made for about 15 years, but I've still got a few shekels in savings that will make my life a little less stressful.
