I've been having this random thought for awhile..

When you hear homosexual what gender do you think of?

Why is it that gay women have their own term lesbian while gay men dont? Homosexual can be either.
It is kind of like how you have miss and mrs for women while only mr for men.

I don't like the word lesbian for some reason. I refer to everyone as gay or homosexual

Lots of questions.. No answers! gogogo :cattail:
(there's a poll too)

Well, none of the above really fit me.

When I hear homosexual I usually think of some generic term like you'd read in the newspaper. Lesbian is female (obviously) and gay for me usually brings male to mind but it depends on the context of course since that one can go both ways.

Homosexual is a mouthful. I usually use the term "gay" for both men and women.

"Lesbian" reminds me too much of school yard taunts which, ironically, were never directed at me

The 'homo' in homosexual means 'same' like in homonym. But it also, of course, means 'man' as in 'not woman' in so many minds-- and 'homasexual' is a non-word.
I say "gay" for men and women, and 'queer' for everyone else.

If I refer to a person's sexual orientation, I refer to homosexual men as gay and homosexual women as lesbian. I didn't vote. Why wasn't that offered as an alternative? Have you ever heard of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transexual association?

I call them by their names, just like I do everyone else. I DETEST labels. Especially when they are applied to myself and my wife !!

Because lesbian comes from the name 'Lesbos', the name of the Greek Island, home of Sappho, Greek poetess who supposedly started the whole woman on woman thing.

Basically, we're all (lovers of our own sex) homosexuals, as 'homo' although meaning 'man', means the generic 'man', as in 'mankind', not simply male.

" 'Homosexual' is a barbarously hybrid word, and I claim no responsibility for it." [H. Havelock Ellis, "Studies in Psychology," 1897]

Dictionary.comThe noun is first recorded 1912 in Eng., 1907 in French. In technical use, either male or female; but in non-technical use almost always male. Slang shortened form homo first attested 1929. The alternative homophile (1960) was coined in ref. to the homosexual regarded as a person of a particular social group, rather than a sexual abnormality. Homo-erotic first recorded 1916; homophobia is from 1969.

I think most of us feel the same way but when called upon to describe a person by their sexual orientation, I say gay and lesbian.

They are people who are my friend or they are not my friend (Probably only because they haven't met me yet, although just meeting me may scare the socks off them).

I really don't care whether they are straight or gay whether they be male or female. If they tell me fine, if not, doesn't matter to me (unless they try to determine whether I am by making a pass - then I have to let them know that I am straight but we can still be friends)

We were raised to say "gay" by my lesbian mother...lesbian always sounded so sexual to me. My friends here refer to themselves as queer, which I hate, or not-straight which I think fits most of us better. :)

Same sex loving is a nice word that's starting to come into vogue here.

Maragaret Cho refers to herself as omni-sexual (I eat everything)

and myself, I am heteroflexible.

This was interesting:

I'm so fucking sick of self absorbed people. You are Jack or Jill or whatever in hell you mom wrote on your birth certificate. But these goddamned euphemisms make me crazy. Blacks still cant find a name that suits them.

The original word for queer was bachelor, then quean. Didnt know that one, did you? Faggots are queans NOT queens.

unless they're in a band :)

I call JBJ a Lazy-boy sourpuss drone (with at least equal precision, I think). :)

girls-who-like-to-fuck-girls and boys-who-like-to-fuck-boys?

I guess that's even more of a mouthful.

 ;)

I do regret the loss of the fine anglo-saxon adjective "gay" to this constricted linguistic ghetto, however. You just can't say, "Now we don our gay apparrel" without getting a snicker anymore. :(
