How fast have you driven?

I hit 160km/hr early this morning on a clear motorway in my trusty 23yr old Honda Civic. My excuse... the sun was shining for the first time in a week :D

The fastest I've driven was in a V8 Ford Fairline 500 circa 1970 - that baby hit 240km/hr (150mph).

a 209.997 MPH lap at Talledaga Motor Speedway. I wanted to be in the 210 club but never made it. The fact that I was driving a home built car instead of one of the "factory" rides made it great even if i didn't make the club. That old Superbird ruled.

It's been about twenty years since I've driven. And I've never gone faster than the speed limit.

The fastest I've ever driven is 128 mph....in my 1985 Z28 that had been modified beyond belief. At that speed, it got sorta...floaty, and since it had t-tops, I was afraid of flipping it.

My dad got up to 145 mph one day in his Alfa Romeo with me in the passenger seat. I was somewhere around ten years old, and thought it was a rush and a half. He made me swear not to tell my mother. :D

I had an 87 Nissan Pulsar from December 94 to June of 2000. I drove it through a flood in 99 I think. But I still got it up to 105 just before trashing it. Unfortunately, that was the only time I ever got it up over 100, and the fastest I have driven in my Firebird in in the low 90s.

I loved that Nissan thoguh (not mine, just the closest I could find):

Nothing very fast in a car. But 87 knots (160 km/h or 100 mph) in a souped-up homemade powerboat was kind of fun. Between the pangs of absolute dread, that is.

I accidently hit 110mph in this old sierra banger I had. I do drive too fast going to work but I'm very very careful in residential areas.

Well... lemme see. I hit 108 MPH in a 1996 Saturn (then the governor kicked in) on the Interstate in Arizona.

If it counts, I've also done 63 MPH on a bicycle. THAT was fun! Much more thrilling than the 108 in the car. :D And for the skeptics - yes that was going downhill.

I used to drive sprint cars. In some cases, on a mile paved track, a sprinter will touch 150MPH.

Many sprint car drivers are supposedly able to not only drive, but also monitor the performance of their car to supposedly incredible degrees. However, some drivers are not deemed capable of perfomance monitoring.

In my sprint car, the insturments were blocked off with plates that bore a useless message: "Stand on it and turn left." I always stood on in and, of necessity, turned left. I was a minor child [fibbed about my age] and had a very aggressive driving style. On the shorter tracks, a sprinter doesn't use brakes. The method use to slow fr a corner is either to slide the car into the corner or 'pop' the car in front of you. I was known as 'Pops.' I had a lot of fights in the pits.

I suspect that I hit 150MPH at the end of some of the one mile straights. However, the real test of skill is to stand on a stroked Chevy as your sprinter negotiates a high banked turn.

I once found myself driving a bus that had a bomb that harmed once the bus got to 50 mph and would explode if it ever went below that. I had to drive it really, really fast, because there was a gap on the highway up ahead, and I had to gain enough speed to make the 50 ft jump. True story.

Years ago I drove on the autobahn outside of Munich coming back from Oktoberfest. I thought I was going quite fast, but I did stay in the right hand lane the entire drive. Oh, and I think I was passed by a school bus at least once.

You remember what warp speed looked like in Star Trek? Where the stars directly ahead were little dots, and everything else was just these streaks? That's what the world looks like when you hit about 180. Even more so when the needle is buried past that - even though that was the highest number on the speedometer.

Straight country roads and no traffic growing up. I go fast. :D

I hit 140 MPH on an LA freeway once and almost the same winding and turning on Laurel Canyon - of course I was 21 and in a cool and expensive sportcar (being a chick I don't know what kind of sportscar I drove) that could. Too bad there were so many slow idiots on Laurel Canyon. Of course, being in Europe? Well, let me tell you about winding roads and people who DO PASS when the line is solid and everyone is already going 70km!

LOL  Back to Eurovision, baby!

I usually stick to the 120kph speed limit in Portugal... and I'm usually the slowest car on the motorway

63mph on a bicycle sounds terrifying.

Charley... you had me worried by driving at such speed into Laurens Canyon :D

Used to cruise at 200 kph all the time on the Autobahn. In the right lane of course. Gotta watch out for the occasional BMW M1 or Porche.:D

That was an education living in Germany. When shopping for new tires, one had to keep in mind the speed rating of the tire. In the US, that is typically never a concern.

When I was behind the wheel, the fastest I've gone is: 140 mph (in a Datsun 280ZX).

When someone else was driving, the fastest I've gone is: 220 mph (in a souped up Ford Mustang....same model driven by Nick Cage in 'Gone in 60 Seconds'...the name escapes me)

I had a 1991 SHO Taurus & got it up to about 110 on I-70 in east Texas one time. It had a lot of pedal left, but I got nervous & slowly backed off.

On a motorbike 140 mph - a blown Vincent Black Lightning that was apparently street-legal. Tyre technology then wasn't as good as it is now. Four miles at over 120 mph and the tyres were shot.

Fastest ever with my hands on the controls?

Catapulted from an aircraft carrier in a two seat version of a Navy fighter. The pilot let me have the aircraft for about 20 seconds...

That car doesn't actually exist. It was pieced together from a few different Mustangs to be a total custom job.

this topic is tempting me to get out on the highway and break my old record. You people are going to get me killed or jailed ;)

somewhere around 120 a few times when i had a z28 camaro. 102 in my avalanche last week when i was late for work. i've driven race cars on short circle tracks, but couldn't tell you what the speeds actually were.

120 indicated in my old Chevy Impalla. (400 CID with overdrive and Booster.)

110 on a BMW Motorcycle on the Autobahn.

No longer do I have any interest in speed. Just let me cruise.
