Vikings and Barbarians

Welcome to the jungle
It gets worse here everyday
Ya learn ta live like an animal
In the jungle where we play
If you got a hunger for what you see
You'll take it eventually
You can have anything you want
But you better not take it from me

Well I'm back again folks and would like to offer you a savage roleplay game where you lead from the front, and what ever you can keep is yours. In this game you find yourself the leader of a small, but hardy band of warriors in savage generic England like lands (see map below). Remember civilization is for the weak!

The short history of these lands is that for the past two hundred plus years the Goreans who are basically Greco-Romans on steroids and crack have ruled. The Home Island is the farthest reaches of their Empire aside from a few minor islands off of, and of coarse the mainland. They built settlements repressed the locals, built cities, and ruled. In the last twenty though they have been dealing with the wagon people from the Eastern plains of the mainland. They're savage mounted warriors in mobile communities that have been knocking hard on the gates of the Empire. The Emperor and his followers have called for a massive military build up in the East to counter this new enemy. Along with a draft and the recall of thousands of older veterans they're pulling garrisons from the Home Island. Without officially saying so they've pulled out and take most of their people with them. The position of Emperor of the Home Island has just become available....you tough enough to step up and take it.

You the co-writers...
are the leaders of a hardy band of either Vikings or Barbarians (more on that later). The natives are weak and disorganized so they need someone strong to keep them in line and why not you? Build your kingdom up from a small village in one of the 18 Providences. Maybe your modest and only want to rule your providence or maybe several or maybe the whole damn thing. Up to you, but you need a lot to make it happen. You need weapons and warriors....this is all about blood and iron folks.

The Home Island....(Map provided from one of my childhood favorite games.)

The castles are cities, but that is not to say there isn't development in the other providences.

Groups to lead

Well there are a couple of choices of who you shall lead into battle on the Home Island, and they have their strengths and weaknesses.

The Vikings

These guys are more the fantasy sterotype Vikings than anything else. Horned helmets (thanks Wagner) and huge axes. They have been coming to the Home Island for over 300 years and things have been less than friendly. They have raided, pillaged, looted, and enslaved the locals. They have fought the Goreans all over their empire.

They're savage fighters and are know for their skill with their heavy battle axe or the lite axe and shield combination attack. They have an impressive maritime culture though and are skilled craftsmen and merchants. Over time they have settled on the Home Island's coastal Providences though they can be found inland where many have settled to be close to good farm land and their employers.

Some Vikings have been privateers for Gorean governors in the past, and some generals have even recruited them into Viking legions where they used their traditional weapons. Unlike the barbarians though these legions would only stay together for the length of a campaign.

While their relationship with the native Islanders has been anything from civil to savage they have never gotten along with the Barbarians who they consider lapdogs of the Goreans.

Primary Structures: Lodge, Forge, Trading post
Favorite Weapon: Battle Axe
Typical Warrior: Hide armor, wooden round shield, knife, axe and/or sword
Trade Goods: Ale, weapons, timber, hides
Most Advanced Technology: Dragon Long Boat and siege catapult

The Barbarians

The barbarians are not simply land bound vikings by any means and if you try to tell one that they will kill you. They're the bastard sons of the empire assigned and some would say exiled to the Home Island generations ago. When the Goreans began marching out from their cities in central Europe they defeated many peoples. Some became part of the Empire while others were wiped out. Those who fought bravely that would never fit in were recruited for military colonies. The men made up the reserve legions, and the women began populating the military colonies.

The barbarians were brought to the Home Island to fight the vikings and that is what they did. There are countless battles between Viking and Barbarian clans, and many Gorean armies have fielded more Barbarian troops than Gorean. They see themselves as savage discipline professional warriors. Mercenary is their principal profession so they use Islanders as craftsmen and farmers.

Primary Structures: Keep, Arsenal, Tavern
Favorite Weapon: Thrusting Spear
Typical Warrior: Leather and plate Armor, Thrusting Spear, longsword and wooden square shield
Trade Goods: Weapons, cattle, grain, pottery
Most Advanced Technology: Crossbows, Stone Fortifications

Other...
Well whenever I write a thread there is always someone who wants to do something a little different than what I envisioned for the thread. Most of the time that is pretty cool. That is why we come here after all to exchange ideas.

That being said if your interested in being Native Islanders or Goreans throw an idea out there and we will talk.

More details to come as I see interest....I hope you all like what you read. Be well and may one day we only play wargames.

Old friends who have been there for the good and bad times
First let me thank Mantra for giving me this idea way back when he was doing his service in a combat zone. Your my hero man. Anyway some of you who have written with me before are probably wondering about my other strategy roleplay thread. All I will say about it is that it isn't dead in my mind. When will I get back to it is hard to say. I have dealt with a few issues lately including betrayal, financial and emotional (not surprising considering the other two). Let me know what you think and I will provide more details. Send me a pm.

Cool buddy tell me what you like, and what your questions are. You're a veteran so let me know what features you like and I will include them again.

sounds interesting... just out of curiosities sake, the native islanders are what again?

Lansfirestar T

The natives are kind of ancient Britons

rengadeirishman ill be a barbarian. ...Glad to have you on board. There possibles this is good.

Ask all the questions you want people

Cool buddy tell me what you like, and what your questions are. You're a veteran so let me know what features you like and I will include them again.

Well, I still favor the more organized armies and the like, but if they're not available, then I'll take a Viking horde.

Mantra....Vikings (hang in there bud we'll get back to the Romans soon)

Lansfirestar....Natives (STORMRAIDER CLAN)

rengadeirishman.....Barbarians (Clan Bladesong)

Three writers for this roleplay each picking a different group. Wow this is going way to well...lol Sounds good guys ask any questions or requests you like. I will post more stuff soon.

And anyone else feel free to throw your head into the ring

*sighs* Gawd I have missed that sense of humor...It is so hard to find potential warlords.

I'll do you one better Lan,

Jagged, how do you want our set up done? Will there be a 'start up' setting for this one or do you just want a leader?

To quote one of my favorite movies...good mother fucking questions.

Well I will post desired info setup. That will come soon enough. But to answer questions now well you should have an idea of why you're a warlord. Your father die? your the bastard son of a leader....you killed the former warlord? whatever keep it interesting people we're in the business of writing here at Lit so make it god. This will be a blood and guts adventure/strategy game. If you want a supporting cast I would say it is in your best interests because people do die (people died often in other adventures). I hope what I plan to post will help out but right now I think we're off to a good start. After all we're all motivated and that matters most.

hot dog, thats a good one. by the way... shouldnt we need a lieutenant or something?

Mantra I'll do you one better Lan,

Jagged, how do you want our set up done? Will there be a 'start up' setting for this one or do you just want a leader?

Lansfirestar do we have to add a reason on how we became their warlord?

Starting Position and other useful facts.

To all potential Warlords.

Leadership isn't easy and it seems no matter what you do not everyone is happy about the results (ask President Bush). That being said no matter how you end up in charge it is up to you to make the best out of what you have. Some of you will thrive and some of you will fall apart, but you will all start off the same.

To begin with every one unless the discuss a story change with me will start off with:

100 warriors...hardy soldiers that have spent their lives perfecting their craft. They have the best weapons in their tribe. When you're campaigning or raiding they're professional soldiers, and body guards to you always. During peace time the will often police your territory acting as game wardens, sheriffs, and hired muscle. Don't keep them busy they will leave or raid others. They can train and lead others and part of the booty they take on campaign is always passed on to you.

1000 peasants...hardy souls that makeup the back bone of your community. They're the farmers and craftsmen who feed you, cloth you, and build up your village. They have plenty of tools and work hard if you treat them right. Treat them badly well you'll see. They most often pay their taxes in crops from their farm. If you have a draft they will come to serve as soldiers armed with farm tools and whatever else they have at hand, but they don't like to serve during planting season though they will learn from experience and keep and maintain captured equipment.

200 Household members....These are your close family friends, advisers, cousins, sisters, brothers, their families. The best smith, baker, and artist recruited to become the house hold of your keep. Perhaps 50% are able to bare arms for you in your campaign. They're often as skilled and as well equipped as your warriors, but are devoutly loyal. Also they're family and will always be asking for stuff. They reside in your "keep" near the village, and if push comes to shove you're self sustaining for a time.

Other groups in a community

Clergy, slaves, mercanaries, and merchants all call your communities home. Unlike the other groups though their numbers are dictated by your starting story, and by your situation at the art of the game.

Each of you will be in a small village type community. The Gorean razed many of their forts and settlements, but they're still communities to be found. Also building descriptions will come later, but feel free to ask questions.

Barbarians
If you're a barbarian communities you will be in one of the hamlets setup by the Goreans. These are essentially military colonies where everything is geared to the warrior life style. Every hamlet is setup virtually the same with streets setup in a exact grid like fashion, and important building in the center.

Every house is a warrior hall where three two to four families live. Often times three generations are under one roof making for crowded homes. Half the all is made up of barbarians with the rest being native Islanders, and there is often a connected by marriage. The locals supply the craftsmanship and the barbarians supply the muscle. Whoever is the eldest warrior always leads the household. Younger sons will work the family forge making Gorean and barbarian weapons, but many of the crafts are left to women to perfect. Some households do farm and heard cattle though. There is drinking hall on every block and they're often used as meeting halls.

This is the ideal setup though and in the passed years many of these communities have come apart. Many residents live outside the town walls in huts and tents more common to their culture. Barbarians raised by their Gorean patrons often conflict with the more newly arrived barbarians and their are often feuds and duals.

These communities often have many slaves in them because they were often kept as booty. Women often out number them men in these villages and many are of slave status. A warrior is often judge by how many concubines he has besides his wife. Also they're brothels next to many of the drinking halls. Many prostitutes have children by Gorean soldiers. Male slaves are kept for manual labor and gladiator games with are popular with barbarians and go on daily (previously they had been band by the Empire).

When the Goreans ruled they would use barbarian colonies as a place to resupply. Warlords always had to always have plenty of extra weapons, cattle, and grain around in case a Gorean force would arrive. Also barbarians were encouraged to have many children so they could fill the ranks of the reserves. It wasn't uncommon for a Gorean commander to arrive one day, and "recruit" a 100 warriors as scouts and another to arrive the next and demand the same.

Facts to Note

With the end of Imperial control and the end to current conflicts many sons are returning home to their colonies. Households can be lead by a woman if they're is no clear leader so more than a few are lead by women, and there is a growing female warrior class. In a barbarian community even peasant warriors are well equipped, and are the toughest and best trained peasants. While exotic everywhere else even a barbarian peasant uses a crossbow for hunting.

Vikings

The Vikings have always been great adventures, explorers, and traders but they always want a place to come home too. Most Viking communities are just large clusters of farms around a town center near where their lord lives. They're almost always on the coast and if not on a river that can handle their boats. Everything is based around what ship a Viking warrior crews. Often times crew members live near each other and within the group are all the individuals necessary to build and maintain the boats.

How each village is depends heavily on how that type of Vikings behave. All are farming communities, but how cash comes in depends on whether they're a trading or raiding community. In a trading community you will see more Islanders and foreign merchants trading for items and services. Also mercenaries folk to these communities more, because they know there is always work and they will be paid in hard coin. In a raiding community everything is centered around preparing for sea going raids, and they're more slaves. For raiders war has to be a season or their communities won't survive.

Because of their shipbuilding ways Viking communities have more craftsmen among their non-warriors than any other group. In fact many farmers are also wood workers and smiths. Slave status varies by community, in some it simply means you can't speak or vote at meetings, others you can be cut down and the only crime is you owe compensation to their master.

Facts to Note

Vikings have large extended families and you never know when relatives will be arriving from foreign shores. It could be just a visit for a few months or they could come to settle. All mercenary work has to be approved by the village warlord whether it is 2 warriors or 200. Vikings have the worst possible relationship with the native Islanders who often just run in terror. Many Viking communities allow the raiding of Islander communities without the permission of the warlord so goods and slaves can be taken.

Native Islanders

One occupier after another you have endured. Only once has a great Warlord united your people and fought of all of the invaders. Sadly the peace only lasted for his life time and you had to endure under and Imperial banner for century. Every one of your settlements was razed and you were forced into hunts near Gorean garrisons. Local warlords were allowed to maintain small forces to deal with rebals and bandits and were often froced to kill their own kinsmen. Most communties are still at those locations and are rich in crops and wool. You have had the worst of it, but now may be your chance to seize control again.

Your communities are just groups of huts with large community farms on the edges. Most communities are getting used to being independent for the first time in years, and for the first time they have no protection. Things are changing now and if someone has the right mindset you can change things for the better.

"Help help I'm being repressed"

That is the life of a Native Islander

"Help! Help! We are being repressed!!!" shouted a villager

"Get a hold of yourself man, we are stronger than they are!" answered an old man.

"Oh really? You think you old fart" shouted a soldier before plunging his spear into his chest.

"Argh!! If only Jagged would start it now... I wouldn't have died" murmured the old man before falling on the ground.

"Grandfather!!!!" cried out a young man as he sobbed over the old man's corpse.

*quiet moment of silence*

"You will pay DEARLY FOR THIS!!!" cried out the young man who picked up a rock and bashed the soldiers head with it, completely forgetting about the sword on his waist.

"Argh!!!!" cried out the soldier.

"Look, a rebellion is starting, TO ARMS!!!!" cried a villager.

Every villager dropped their pitchforks and proceeded to grab rocks and bash the soldier's heads...

*A humorous take on how the rebellion started*
