SAN FRANCISCO - Even as same-sex couples across California begin making plans to tie the knot, opponents are redoubling their efforts to make sure wedding bells never ring for gay couples in the nation's most populous state.

A conservative group said it would ask California's Supreme Court to postpone putting its decision legalizing gay marriage into effect until after the fall election. That's when voters will likely have a chance to weigh in on a proposed amendment to California's constitution that would bar same-sex couples from getting married.

If the court does not grant the request, gay marriages could begin in California in as little as 30 days, the time it typically takes for the justices' opinions to become final.

I have to admit, I'm cracking up about this, all these conservative groups coming out of the woodwork, Laura Ingram among many, up in arms about this, I heard a guy on the radio saying he would move his family back to Texas if this passed!

Cracks me up, let them marry, who cares??

America has no one religion ("Christianity" hardly covers all the sects). No one Royal family. It has marriage as the leveler, the center of every community, the yardstick for everything else we value. It's not religion or leadership around which this country was formed. It was marriage. It's the pivot around which the country was built. That's why they care. They think if homos are allowed to call their unions "marriage" the keel of the ship that keeps America on course will break. They're quite serious about this.

I do not understand why anyone would care if two same sex people got married? So what?

And I don't want to hear any of that "sanctity of marriage" crap either. If they're so concerned about the sanctity of marriage why aren't they picketing those wedding chapels in Las Vegas? or women who marry 9 times? Or couples that get divorced after 2 weeks? Where's the sanctity in that?

ferfuckssake...

Its not like today's marriages are doing that great. Isn't it 60% of all marrages going bad? Something like 80% of second marriages going bad? Then there is that Elliot Spritzer crew, Ashley Madision type, banging outside their marriages. Seriously....

Not gay, married or in california.

Y'all can marry german shepherds as long as I don't hear your SO barking at night.

It's the definition of Marriage itself, and how it plays into the cultural consciousness.

Gay marriage opponents ought to mind their own business and worry more about what is clearly not happening in their own bedrooms, geez.

What do I keep saying? It's not about fucking. It's about America. Their concern is for the basic building block of civilization (as they see it). If you want to deal with them, seriously, then you have to recognize that this is the level they're playing on.

Colorado was trying to get the gays a few rights here and there. During the debate I saw this bumper sticker.

Colorado is about mountain men, not men mounting men.

Think you are right actually. Two opponents playing on two different fields.

That's why the 'debate' goes on forever. ZZZZZZZZZZ:rolleyes:

You're absolutely right.
This has nothing to do with the actual living arrangements. Most of these conservatives would grudgingly allow same-sex partners to enjoy common law benefits.
But once you call it "Marriage" you're treading into dangerous water. Now you're eroding a fundamental building block of American Family Values.

The tide is turning on this issue. The Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled in favor of same gender marriage in 2003. The legislature tried to overturn it, but found that it was harder to do. After several years, the sky had not fallen in, and people had begun to accept it.

So, what's next as a issue of division?

Flag burning?

Abortion?

Circumcision?

Is this at all making sense?
In simple terms, people vote for elected officials, those officials appoint people to the bench to act as judges, the judges make a ruling but now some people want the judges to wait so the people can now vote on their decision?

I'm pretty sure abortion has been, is and always be an issue of division, and that one has no borders.

I believe the California judges were elected also.

Holy shit really?

It seems rather like a bit of circus then ... we'll elect you, but if you make a decision we don't like please don't make it law until we can vote on it.

An argument against electing judges maybe?

The judges said a law banning same-sex marriage violates the State Constitution. The voters in the State can change the constitution. Thus, they don't want the ruling enforced until they try to change the constitution to make the ruling moot.
