Got the police called on me today.

This morning my wife and I hopped the car and headed north to my parents place. We took the longer scenic route and had a nice relaxing drive up there. We were going up there for two reasons. The first was to check on their place and the second was to pick up a recliner they had given us.

After almost three hours of driving we pulled into their place and opened it up. As we stepped into the place we were almost knocked over by a stench. It took me all of one minute to find the problem, they had forgotten a large bag of trash. Not good. We pulled that puppy outside right quick.

After we had pulled the recliner out and put it in the back of the car we went back inside to check the blinds. We were in the process of putting several of the blinds back up when there was a voice outside the door ordering us out. It wasa the local police and they were not happy.

Our I.D.'s were checked and we were patted down as they asked us who we were and why we were there. I explained and to prove my point brought them inside so they could see the pictures of my wife and I with my parents. They still didn't believe things so I ended up calling my parents and have them talk with the Police. (My parents are in Mass.) After that the police were all smiles and quite helpful.

It turns out the person who had called in the complaint was one of their neighbors. A neighbor who has seen and talked with me on several occasions by the way. It seems she is pissed off at everyone in the park because she is being evicted and saw this as a way to get some measure of revenge.

Things worked out well though, my wife and I were cleared while yet another mark went against the neighbor. Oh and we did get the new recliner home.

Hate is a strong word, not to mention emotion. Do you really hate them or do you just dislike them because they do a job not many people would want to do?

I was a cop at one time and I helped more people than I pissed off which made the job rewarding. Those that I pissed off deserved to get pissed off for they were the ones doing wrong. Of course not in their eyes.

I have found those who dislike cops are those who have had run ins with them for good reason. Usually, when you break the law you see a cop. Even if you not breaking the law but are in a place where those around do, you will see a cop.

Oh, and next time your in trouble like in fear for your life from someone bigger than you, or someone has broke into your house and is wandering off with you computer...call a real estate agent...maybe he/she can take care of your problem.

Sorry dude. Never ever ever has a cop ever helped me. And as your assumption about those thow dislike cops are the ones who have had run ins with them for good reason is pure BS. My car has been stolen, I've been threatened and attacked, my house has been broken into and not once during each of those situations did a cop come to my rescue. So you can miss me with that.

I wouldn't call a cop to come help me if my ass was on fire. I'm sure they'd much rather watch me burn than help me anyway. Appreciate your 2 cents though...

Mmmm sadly though...as far as police reputations go, its like all reputations, the few ruin it for the many.

I've met a couple good ones, but for the most part, I've met a lot of police officers whom have let the feel of power go to thier heads. I've been treated as dirt beneath thier shoes, I've seen them wrongfully arrest someone close to me and thereby place my brother in danger, and I've had them threaten me before for no reason other than I had an expired hunting license in my glove box [was not hunting season, was not armed]

I agree with the above poster that one bad cop ruins it for all of them. They've helped me on a couple of accidents and were pretty cool. I've gotten tickets before but I've always deserved them!

I don't think anybody said distrust. The word used was 'Hate'. To hate an entire group of people only because of what they do is a defect within themselves. I'm not going around saying "I hate all bankers" because a bank manager got caught stealing my money.

Are there bad cops out in society? Sure. Are there good cops who are working to better our society? Sure. But don't hate an entire group for no reason. I guess if every cop in the USA has somehow wronged you - then you probably need to rethink your life and stop breaking the law.

It's real easy for me to tell you that I hate the cops, every damn one of them, individually and collectively. I think Orwell did a pretty good job of dramatizing and heightening the very good reasons one would hate them in 1984.

I disagree. You would have to hate society for this. Society sets what is the current mode of thought or feeling not the police. The cops do not make the laws (IE: current mode of thought or feeling) they only enforce what is given to them.

So talk what you KNOW not what you THINK. I have yet to encounter a good cop period, you say they exist and I say they don't. Should I encounter a good cop maybe my opinion will change but considering my history with cops I don't see that happening.

Los Angeles in the '60's was home to a very corrupt and brutal police force. I grew up in fear of the cops. This stretched to almost any authority-- anyone in a uniform would start a panic reaction in me.

I'd like to point out that Mellowgyrl is a person of color-- Lesbiaphrodite, I'm not sure about-- and the experiences of a black or Hispanic person are going to be miles different than a white's.

I've met fascist cops in Franco's Spain.

I've met Australian cops.

I've met German cops.

I've met communist Yugoslavia's cops.

I've met French cops. They have three types of police - the police, the gendarmarie and the CRS.

Franco's Guardia Civil and the French CRS are the only ones that I would cross the street to avoid. Modern Spanish cops actually enforce the law instead of seeking bribes to prevent them beating you up. The French CRS are unbribeable but just plain mean.

I work with my local British police force frequently. They think differently from "civilians" but if approached politely will respond the same way. They treat drunk teenagers carefully unless the drunks try to attack them.

All Police forces are society's agents to use force if no other means will stop crimes being committed. They vary according to how much force they will use in a given situation. In the UK our police do not normally carry guns but if someone has a gun and is threatening the public there are armed police who will respond and shoot to kill if necessary. That happens so rarely that it is national news every time.

I don't mean to sound patronising, and I hope it doesn't come over that way, but I find that one of the saddest endictment's of modern society that I have ever read.

I live in the UK, and I know there are corrupt members of any government appointed agency, but I personally have complete faith in our police force, but then they are not set up the way your's are. We don't elect Police chiefs, and we have a national police force, not state/county. I find any office that is held as a result of posturing and begging for votes is open to immense corruption....i.e. politicians.

But, that said, I have to believe in the police force as a force for good, otherwise my whole belief in the inherent goodness of society (I know there are bad members, I'm not that stupid) just disappears down the pan.

I could wish for one policeman to come along and reverse your opinion of the whole.
