A man walks into a brothel and approaches a beautiful Oriental prostitute and asks? "Is it true Asian women have vaginas that run sideways?"

"Why?" she asks, "Are you a harmonica player?"

Don't get me wrong, I'd wreck this chick in a heart beat. But Granma Tsunade she isn't. Granma Tsunade, much like Sailor Moon is clearly a caucasion charachter. You know I never really understood why Japanese animation is so dominated by whites. I mean I would assume they would draw themselves cus that's what's normal in their culture you know?

True, but a Caucasian Tsunade would hardly fit the theme of this thread.

I wasn't debating that, it just strikes me as weird and I didn't really notice it until just them. That Asian girls seem to be the ones who are drawn to Cosplay, but there is a distinct lack of Asian Charachters in an art form that originats in Asia.

I mean I never get to dress up at anime or game conventions. Afro-Samurai (not techincally anime anyway) about wraps up the list of blacks in anime. I mean I can kinda swing guys like Kusanagi of Blue Seed cus he's dark skinned enough, but the lack of blacks isn't really shocking. The lack of Asian looking charachter IS odd. Arguably odder is that if I had to pick out the Asian charachters on Naruto Orochi is the first one to come to mind (though to be fair only Tsunade and Naruto really seem to be white.

That has always struck me as odd, that the characters were not of the same nationality as their creators. But then, there are characters with natural pink hair (Sakura), so I've just chocked it all up their own fantasy world and suspended disbelief about it resembling our own.

But it doesn't seem limited to Naruto. It's like anime in general. Sailor Moon has (mostly) realistic hair colors and the girls are still clearly not Asian.

Course I've always found it . . .funny (I don't have a better word here) that Super Saiyans (and Super Hedgehogs) are blue eyed and blonde haired.

Round eyes=friendly. Slanted eyes=untrustworthy. Interestingly, this isn't entirely a racially motivated phenomenon. The first cartoons aired in Japan were Disney cartoons. Disney characters (Donald, Mickey, Goofy, for example) are drawn with oversized eyes. The first Japanese animators copied the style, and their successors copied the cartoons of their youth (Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion, etc.) The full story is too complex, so I'll decline from entering into the more esoteric origins of the aforementioned stereotype. Disney cartoons had/have big eyes, Japanese cartoons had/have big eyes. Without becoming a giant nerd about it, that's it.

And Goku's superior form being a Blue/Blonde?

To be fair the rest of your point all makes perfect sense, it just seems odd to me that such a phenomon lasted particularly in a nation where people naturally have slanted eyes that they would maintain the practice that big caacuasion looking eyes are "good" and that an appearance more in line with their natural appearance (dark hair, slanted eyes) are most likely found in their villians.

Course I'm the guy who loves wonders at what point do two artists who obviously admire each other just shut up and work together. The guy who makes Naruto is obviously (and he admits) he is in many way emulating DBZ. Which really explains the Naruto(Goku), Sasuke (Vegeta), Orochi-Maru/Itachi (Frieza/Buu) relationship. Not to mention the color schemes

Then along comes Blue Dragon and suddenly Akira is writing a story about a guy possessed with a powerful evil force? At what point do these two just shake hands and say look I love everything you've ever done, lets do the anime that 30 years from now people will be comparing everything else to? you mean like they do to to DBZ and Naruto now? Yeah. K.

Nuclear radiation. An even more concise way to explain any Japanese pecadillo which doesn't make sense.

And, there are plenty of dark haired/dark eyed Japanese heroes. Shinji Ikari, Heero Yuki, Yusuke Urameshi, Carrot Glace, I could go on and on. But, DBZ and Naruto would be considered to be better business assets by American producers, if only for the blue/blond connection. If you compare Americas's anime input to Europe's anime input, you'd picket every studio in Hollywood. Europeans have finished airing anime that isn't even a glimmer in the eye of the American importer, because Hollywood loves blue eyed blondes. Hell, IMHO, the reason why porno actresses started shaving theis pussies was for one simple reason: A box of Clairol, a set of contacts and a handy razor increases your marketability in the eyes of the average American adult film producer (After all, gentlemen love blondes ;) ). So, why wouldn't it be the same for anime?

Anime hair is color coded. Red=wild, strong.
Blue and/or green=calm, studious
White=powerful, usually evil
Black and/or Brown=normal, competent, average
Blonde=outsider (NOT JAPANESE!)

For example, BSSM has three blond characters. Usagi is ditzy/clutzy/untalented/unfeminine by cultural standards (NOT JAPANESE!).
Ami was rasied in foreign countries (NOT JAPANESE!).
Haruka is a tranny dyke {Takeuchi's words, not mine} (NOT JAPANESE!).

DBZ has 2 Saiyans and 3 half-Saiyans, living on a planet with approximately 5 billion people. Saiyans have supercharged states in which their hair turns blond and their eyes turn blue or green. Therefore, Saiyans are outsiders by default (NOT JAPANESE!!!).

Naruto is a clutzy underachiever whose ability to get into trouble is usually connected to his willingness to buck the status quo and do his own thing. (NOT JAPANESE!!)

IrezumiKiss could give you volumes of information about Japan's schizoid superiority/inferiority complex. For that matter, there are dozens of books detailing the cultural traits which develop on overcrowded islands ( Japan, Great Britain, Polynesia, Madagascar, etc. ) You're fixated on Japan's ideosyncracies due to market saturation. Nothing wrong with that, you jus need to step back for a minute.

I feel like I missed out on a totally interesting convo here.

Reiha's piece of mind:

First off you have forgotten Aino Minako ( Sailor V- blonde), Chibiusa ( MiniMoon- Pink), Meiōh Setsuna( Sailor Pluto, green) and a few others. As taken from http://moonbase.rydia.net; the following is a outline of what hair colourings symbolize:

Natural colours:

Black: neutral. generally positive connotations -- keep in mind that this is the normal hair color in Japan; all other hair colors are "unnatural" in that culture, and consequently somewhat suspicious. ( Think Hino Rei, Natsume Aya in manga)

Blonde:this hair color has two diametrically opposite interpretations, although which one applies in a particular case should be relatively clear.

1. obvious power and intelligence. often calculating and self-serving.
2. ditzy and immature. accident-prone.

in either case, blonde-haired characters usually mean trouble. ( Usagi, The Saiyans)

Brown: nothing screams "I'm a stock character" like having brown hair. there are of course exceptions. ( Think Haruhi Suzumiya for example as an exception; for stock- think Makoto.)

Red ( Natural): n women, red hair generally connotes a brazen, confident character -- often having special abilities. male characters with red hair tend to be quiet and humble, but skilled fighters. ( Think Natsume Aya- has auburn hair in anime)

Grey: grey hair usually connotes a character with a hidden power that will be revealed later in the series. these characters are usually very intelligent and often (although not always) evil. ( Think Shintenku, Natsume Shin)

White:
on younger characters, full, white hair gives a sense of dignity and style. on older characters, it may just mean they're ... well, old. ( Think Natsume Maya ( manga),
Ginko)

"Exotic" Colours

Blue: Likable characters. shy, sweet, smart, funny. ( Think Ami, Rei, Ryo)

Green: these characters are usually good at heart, but misguided. Seen in an antagonist, it often means the character will defect to the side of the "good guys" by the end of the series. Sympathetic characters (good guys) tend to be roguish but good-hearted. ( Think Setsuna)

Pink: generally only seen in female characters, girls with pink hair are cheerfully cute, often to the point of being downright obnoxious (as if you needed hair color to pick up on that) ( Think Nyu, Chibiusa,)

Purple: our guess is as good as mine; there just aren't that many examples to work from. characters tend to be upbeat, but other than that, it's hard to generalize. ( A few are Junko, Kirika; etc.)

Hope this helps.

As to the point of these characters being known as "American"- there's no evidence proving this.

Because (some not all) anime is from Japan; hence people want to see how Japan views us.

If only it were that simple

First off. What's with the anime eyes? The way I see it.. the more big, cuter and rounder an anime eye is.. the more sincere, kind and "likable" the character is. Now this is only from my observation- this is no fact. Think what you like, I'm ranting here.

To contradict, more serious characters have realistically sized eyes, whereas; there are characters who seem to see fine despite the fact that they walk around with there eyes closed. As eyes are very often used to convey how the character feels characters with their eyes closed tend to be mysterious or untrustworthy, and they often hide this under a whimsical facade ( Like what's his face from Fushigi Yugi?)
Characters sometimes change their eye shape to conduct a change in "attitude". A good example of this is Natsume Maya. When Maya is in a fight, she has narrow, serious eyes. At most other times her eyes are either big and wide or slightly slanted to show her sexual prowlness. When Maya turns into a chibi, her eyes are wider symbolizing "cuteness- more kawaii". It's all simple basics really. Oh and before I forget, if you see an character with Irises that are constantly "changing"- that usually means they are unstable ^^:

Like Mansa Musa said, the stereotype in America is that blondes are cheerful and rather um...ditzy. The whole blue-eye, blonde hair is normally played up with the cutsiness ( remember- cute = selling!) but then again not all blonde hair, blue eyed characters are seen this way. Take Sailor Uranus who is practically known for her um..gender role which I think is complete genius. She is calm, cool and collective- far from being Usagi-chan don't you think?
And not all blondes are good fellows either. If you have watched Fushigi Yugi, then you will know of who I speak of. Then there's the Saiyans- Vegeta ( who I don't even know anymore who's side he's on, so we'll say Majin Vegeta! Powered up of course). I'm going to start now because this is already longer than what I have intended.

let us keep posting more asians!
