D S L? D S L?????

I'm with you on the idea of giving up the dish

Sorry for your troubles, have a rum on me :D

But - but- we love our satellite dish!

That's what I meant :)

The idiots at Time Warner can't even charge the same amount two months in a row.
How do you trust a company that can't count?
Got twice as many channels with DirecTV for $5 more a month :D

Now if they get the price of Satellite internet affordable... :D

How's Verizon's cell service in your area?

I have no idea what the relative cost would be, but the broadband they're currently mpimmping in their adds plugs into the USB port and presumably gives you broadband speeds comparable to DSL.

If you're in a location where you've got a good cell signal, I think it's would be at least as reliable as the ISP and Phone company playing "it's not MY fault. have you checked withthe other company to get it fixed?"

One problem with Satellite, latency. With satellite you will never be able to VPN to a VPN server if you require that. Also with some games, the latency of the signal can cause lag.

You don't have to get cable tv with cable internet - 8 - 12 mbit download speeds, 786 kbit - 1.5 mbit upload speeds.

Check out the cable web page for you area... Comcast = www.comcast.com

That's a thought, isn't it?

We just found Direct TV info - call us and set up your internet account, they said.

Hmmm.

I have been planning to add internet to my cell. So that is a thought as well.

We dumped Verizon for Cingular, actually, a couple of years ago. But we'll see what their take is on this entire event.

:rose:
I did a quick check at DirectTV's site and found this in the fine print:

Internet Service provided by a preferred DIRECTV provider and billed separately.

I thought that might be the case, because the Direct TV dish simply doesn't have the capability of uploading any significant amount of information IF it's capable of transmitting a signal at all.

The best DirecTV or any satelite dish system without a fairly hefty -- and hazardous -- transmitter can do is use the satelite for downloaded information and use a dial-up or DSL land-line to upload information -- and I don't believe the satelites DTV uses have the capacity to transmit the individualized signals that even hybrid satelite internet would require. (that means if you get a web-page from a satelite, it had to broadcast the webpage to ALL receivers pointed at it.)
