Making traveling a bit easier

When my wife and I travel in the car we often do long distance trips. We are also cheap as hell and will often be found sleeping either in the car or in a tent beside the car. We have our own ways of keeping clean and cooking when traveling in this way.

Our car has a small high RPM Engine which also just happens to have a fairly large semi flat cover over it. (Right below a nicely placed cross bar.) Because of this I have created a hanger which holds a coffee pot, a water pot and an Ammo Can flat against this. What this means is I can fire up the engine and use it to heat our coffee as well as water for bathing and cooking. (I am creating something like this for on the bike.)

These containers can also be used over a small camp stove or even an open fire.

On some trips when I know we're going to be using the tent I pack along a camp stove. Oh and the tent has been modified for the car. It now has a fly that extends from the main body of the tent to the back of the car making for a nice area to sit and drink our coffee and wash up in the mornings.

So how do you make your traveling a bit easier?

I make sure I wear slip-on shoes to the airport and try to remember to wear a shirt with a front pocket.

I wish other people would! I am sick of people bringing on two huge bags and taking forever to get seated and get their bags stowed. Actually there are a lot of things about flying that annoy me/cause me pain. But it is the fastest way to travel.

By preference, I drive where possible and time permits, so I'll leave the airport and train tips to others.

I make travel easier by essentially adhering to the rules for long-haul truckers; I stop for rest break every two hours, make overnight arrangements every eight to ten hours of driving times.

I'm too old and stiff to sleep in the car or camp, so I'm not prepared for camping -- although I do have a 120VAC/12VDC coffee pot and generally stock up on sandwich makings and finger foods for the lunch stop. I've dropped my previous heavy cola consumption in favor of Lipton Iced Tea To Go and similar single serving instant drink packets so I really don't need the coffee pot for coffee any more but I still haul it around for heating soup and other things.

The biggest thing I do to make travel easier is to plan ahead I know where and when I'm supposed to be at any given point in the trip and have contingency plans for whatever I can anticipate Murphy throwing at me.

Yeah, same here.

It's 9 hours to Chicago, so says MapQuest, anyway.

With decent weather and proper motivation, I can make it in 8.

Another suggestion for those whom make long travels and would like something hot to eat is a backpacking stove. They make small ones that go right on top of the fuel canister and can support a small pot thats large enough to hold, say a can of Chunky soup. Whats nice is they can heat up the soup in only a couple of minutes, they're small enough these days to put in a glove box, and fuel is available at any sporting goods store. Drawback...you have to use it in a well ventilated area [aka OUTSIDE of your car]

Hmmm... my job requires me to work around people who fly... so I know all the little tips and tricks to speed your way through the security process.

Personally... I like to drive. Something about having my own car wherever I'm going.... and not needing to worry about timetables or other people's schedules. One of the best things my wife and I do to make our trips easier is plan for plenty of time... and have little snacks, drinks, entertainment.. etc. available in the car. Oh... that, and it really helps to put a sleeping bag across the back seat of the car (just my wife and I.. no kids) so that one of us can sleep while the other drives. We made it from Tucson, Arizona (college) to not quite Key West Florida (a smaller key a few islands up the chain for spring break) in just over 35 hours this way. Oh... and that also counted a couple rather lengthy construction delays.
Maybe that's why we made it in just under 34 hours going back.
