Angry and Upset

I was supposed to be advertising my first print chapbook, Slippage, to the world today but that dream has ended up in tatters (or completely and utterly fucked to put it bluntly)

The 40 poem chapbook has a major editorial error - several duplicate poems. I'm going to have to destroy the copies I have and get my publisher, Erbacce Press, to withdraw it.

Being angry and upset at those idiots doesn't cover it

I'm sorry sweetheart. Life has a way of throwing ugly curves at us when we least expect it. For what it's worth, you don't have to be published in a new chapbook for me to know that you are a) a wonderful poet, and b) one whose power continues to grow as you keep writing.

Get through it and keep writing. Another, better opportunity will come your way. I guarantee it.

You're young and cute and talented. Wait until you're older and really BAD things happen. I hope that cheered you up. :D
It will get better. :rose:

Hey, C.

Of course you are upset. Rightly so.

My first impression, though, based on what you said is wrong (i.e., duplication of poems, not editorial errors in the poems, makes me think you've encountered a binding error. Most likely, the firm that was contracted to bind your chapbook bound duplicate pages together. You'll likely find some poems missing and others duplicated, which is the usual result of that kind of problem. This is probably (probably, though not certain) not the publisher's fault.

That being said, it is extremely frustrating. All I can say is that printing problems are part of being an author. The first professional article I wrote, which was of a computer program, left off half the code. Thing absolutely wouldn't work. Made me look like an idiot.

I have had poems mixmastered together in print. Part of one is transposed to another, leaving the original with no ending and tacking on a "huh?" effect to the latter.

Does that make me mad? Well, more disappointed than angry. Frustrated. But, stuff happens.

Good luck in resolving this. I'm just impressed by your energy and talent in getting your poetry accepted for publication like darn near everware. :)

You are doing extremely well, bud. I don't know if anyone tells you this, but you are. I'm not envious, because I don't do the work (We will not talk about whether I write well enough to be in the mix. That's a sensitive subject with me. ;))

Though you are swimming around in waters I am reluctant to even wade in, you are doing remarkably well. Tell me when they fix it. Hell, I'd buy your book.

Hey sorry about this! I looked at the site, it seems like they are good people giving new poets an opportunity to get their work published free or at a subsidy. I recognized quite a few names. I hope that they give your chapbook another run. Publishing is not easy by any stretch, and even if it is their fault, you might try to be a little more understanding, if only for your own state of mind :) If you had to pay for the books, I hope that you do get them replaced. You have time and the poems keep pouring like water....

best of luck! Let us know if they make it right-- I wonder if they do anthologies?

I did this to someone's poem in the original copy of our anthology. Thing is, the guy did not notice in the proof I sent. Still I felt very badly and fixed it pronto. I think he forgave me.

Amen! Keep on keeping on!

Um. You are. Good enough not to just be in the mix, but to rise to the top. (In case no one has told you that recently.) A time will come when you have the time to push your wares, that is not important now, just keep on writing :)

I'd buy it too, if I did not just spend $115 on CubCakes at our first cubscout auction. I am such a freaking sucker. It is actually quite a beautiful story. If I ever stop tearing up about it I will write it down. Maybe a flash fiction. hmm.... sorry Christian for hijacking your thread. I hope things look better in a few days and it all works out well.

I'm so sorry to hear it! Similar things, although much more minor, have happened to me occasionally and it's incredibly disturbing, I know. Here's hoping it all gets sorted out and your book is perfected and available soon. Do make sure we know where to get it! I want a copy too.

Good luck. When you get the book published St. Marks books in NYC (3rd Ave.) is open to showing / selling chapbooks so you may want to check it out.
