viv wants to come, but it will be difficult. It means convincing her folks or mine to watch the kids for a long weekend. Not easy to do.

What is involved/necessary for being tied. Is it sexual or more artistic, or both?

Being tied? Stand there (or kneel, or lay, etc) and do as your told. Same as most T/b scenes. Or, as I'm fond of saying, stand there and look pretty.

There are some questions regarding health issues that I discuss with any prospective bottom. They're pretty non-invasive though.

It can be sexual, it can be artistic, it can be both. It depends on what is being done, how it is presented, and the energy between the rigger and bunny.

Truth told I don't know much about this side of D/s beyond looking at photos. I imagine it would be important to avoid pulse points and putting pressure on nerves. Pressure on nerves is the big thing. Circulation can be disrupted for longer than most people think (talking about a few minutes, not longer), though it's not a great idea. Nerves are the BIG problem, as it does not take long at all the damage the nerves.

There are plenty of sites and books out there. If you hit the first post here, you'll see a bunch of links. One is to a post that has links to a lot of sites. They don't necessarily go much into nerves and circulatory protection, but offer ties that don't cause problems (generally).

How well do you usually know your rope bunnies beforehand?

Sometimes. I've tied people that I'd met that night. I usually discuss tying with them and explain what will happen, etc. The discussion gives me time to figure the person out, and make sure that I really want to tie them.

And how long does a tie generally take?

Depends entirely on the complexity of the tie. I can secure wrists in a matter of minutes (faster if I'm using hojo style ties), and I can take an hour plus to get a complex tie done. And remember that it generally takes almost as long to untie as it does to tie.
