Who Wants to Publish with me on Fictionwise?

Okay, here's the deal... I've been trying to figure out a way to get a larger market for those books e-publishers won't take, either because they're too raunchy or too taboo (for epubs, not Lit)... like my Babysitting the Baumgartners series, Naughty Bits, etc...

Fictionwise is a great option, but they don't take individual, unpublished titles, and if you register as a "publisher" they want you to have at least three separate authors.

So here's what I thought... why not partner up with some folks on Lit who have booklength work they'd like to sell that e-pubs have rejected because of their publishing requirements?

Essentially this would be a partnership of authors. As head of the "publishing group" I wouldn't take any extra royalties, etc. That would all go to you. Fictionwise pays you 50% return on sales, and you'd get all of it.

I need two interested authors. Of course, I'll take more. Why not? The more the merrier!

ETA:

eXcessica authors are as varied as their fiction—some are well-established, award-winning and bestselling writers, and some are exciting new fledgling talents. There are authors here going under different pen names whose work has been published with some of the largest e-and-print publishers in the business who have chosen to publish with eXcessica because of the freedom of expression we afford them. Together, we are a partnership of writers bringing you the best in erotica, from the sweet to the forbidden…

If you are an author interested in publishing with eXcessica, you need to know that eXcessica is something entirely new. We are not a traditional e-publisher, instead we are a collaborative formed to remove the middleman and bring the reader some of the best in truly hot erotica.

eXcessica publishes everything from sweet to scorching, including the taboo stuff other e-publishers won't touch. eXcessica authors cross the spectrum from award-winning professionals to fresh, new voices. Some are here because they want complete control over their work. Others are here because they want a larger cut of their sales proceeds. Still others, because their material is considered too edgy for traditional e-publishers.

By having each author take responsibility for their own editing and cover art, eXcessica is able to make its overhead expenses negligible. eXcessica authors know that sloppy work reflects poorly on us all and that success hinges on everyone doing their very best. (Note: eXcessica will not release anything that hasn’t undergone extensive peer editing, so readers can be ensured of work quality!)

I've looked at this for Coming Together. Haven't run with it yet, though. FictionWise has a per-upload fee -- so there is some overhead involved.

From what I understand, that charge is $15, and is taken off whatever royalties are incurred. And if you never sell $15 worth, you don't owe them.

Or did I read that wrong??

Novels or Novellas are fine... I've got stuff from 15k-80K... so whatevah!

Dunno. I never got that far.

And I have stuff as short as 7K on FictionWise (through Phaze). There's not a minimum size, AFAIK.

Just to be clear:

This is a non-exclusive agreement, so you can have your stuff anywhere else you want! ;)

So anything you have here on Lit can be published on Fictionwise and still stay on Lit.

And you can pull your stuff at any time.

Sounds like a wonderfully creative idea, Selena, as long as all the authors involved are above-board and talk it out until everyone is on the same page--that way people get quickly published while understanding they need to market their own material (you will be hurt by the lack of reviews that the established epubs like Loose ID, Phaze, Samhain, etc, will get you--correct me if I'm wrong), so don't expect 100+ copies sold in your first month (probably lucky to get more than 10).

I actually had a similar collaborative idea in the works (and still is so I wont go into details), but it was based on the same basic concept of finding a creative solution to get around the current industry blocks while benefiting everyone involved.

I wish you great success in this effort/idea.

Yep, it's totally a self-promoted thing... I don't know how much "reviews" actually help sales, frankly... I think it's more name recognition than anything else... and a whole long list of product (i.e. a backlist of books) for people to read...

I have a good half dozen novella/novels, some here at Lit. (e.g., Wolf Creek, Death on the Rhine, Vampire LaCour's 2nd Coming), and at least one being put together with a coauthor that haven't been submitted anywhere. But you'd have to be cool with only working through the coauthor as the only agent required and with no money up front. Nothing real name traceable back to me.

I would love to Join up with you Darling :)

PM Me... I have some experience with a lot of things that might be beneficial to a start up like this :)

hmmmmmmm---- maybe this is what all this is about - freeing up my time for endeavors close to my heart.....besides being ill....

Nope, no money up front, and you can use your pseudonym.

I will probably have to get a "release" (i.e. that you give me "publisher" non-exclusive electronic rights)... but if you want to use the co-author for that, it's fine!

Ms. Kitt:

I would possibly be interested in reworking a couple of Lit works to put them into acceptable form and format. Perhaps re-writing the Megan stories and my early Lit work will help me break my block on Real Vampires Don't Surf.

Thanks, but on second thought, we're probably looking for a publisher that would do cover art, etc. I/we have a lot of material; I just can't think of an angle that means I personally don't have to sign anything by real name.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you can set up a PayPal account using your pen name's email address--that you don't have to enter any RL personal info as long as you spend the money collecting on the account with other PayPal vendors (versus, of course, asking for a check/payment from PayPal). I had checked into this about a year ago because I have similar problems/needs for anonymity. Assuming you aren't planning on making more money via this process than you can spend (and I bet this is a safe assumption), then you could work it if you really wanted to.

any thoughts?

Here's some info about how this is (probably) going to work:

*No money will be required by you to partner with us. There is a $12 charge by Fictionwise for each title uploaded, however this fee is taken off initial royalties. If your book never makes enough to pay the $12, you still owe nothing. You retain all rights to your book and you can pull it at any time. This is a non-exclusive contract, meaning your stuff can be published elsewhere.

*I will send you a general electronic release form to complete. This is NOT a contract. We are PARTNERS in this venture. This just says the work is yours and you give the partnership a right to sell it.

*You provide me with an EDITED manuscript (I will provide you names of some possible editors, but editing is YOUR responsibility, and I will give each mss a cursory look, and if it's not edited, it will be returned to you.)

*You provide me with COVER ART. This includes a copyright notice (where you got your photo - stock or creative commons license etc.) If you want the name of some cover artists who will complete your cover (for a nominal cost) let me know.

In regards to sales... do NOT expect to sell 100 books the first day... even the first year. More like 10... 20... who knows? Promotion is YOUR responsibility. You can do that here on Lit, you can make your own web site, myspace, facebook, etc. If you are already a "popular" author on Lit, you may have created a Yahoo group to let your fans know about your work. You can promote there as well.

Why would someone buy a book that's available already for free on Lit?

Good question. I've discovered that readers love to have the work in one piece (most of my stuff was/is serialized). They also like to have the option of printing it out on their printers and taking it (to bed!) with them *grin*

Plus, remember, Fictionwise is another market for your books... people might find you there that wouldn't come to Lit.

Thanks. I'll cogitate this. My situation is that I don't need the money, but that any hint I write in this area would significantly affect the areas where I write professionally--and where I do make quite a bit of money. Thus far, the stories I've sold have gone directly to subscriptions of services I also don't want any real name trace to. In this instance, I don't anticipate much money and would be happy to let my coauthor/agent have whatever there is--as long as there's no possibility of a true name hookup (and, no, my coauthor/agent doesn't know who I am either).

I'd love to have you, sr... if you can work it out.

When the hamster wheel slows down I would be very interested in participating. Can you pencil me in?

I'd be interested if I had anything that length to put up. I hope to spend May doing the deranged NaNoWriMo thing but that wouldn't likely be ready to go for at least six months afterwards. Still, if there's room when The Branx/I] is actually finished, I'm good for this.

Okay, I'll make a list of everyone interested here and PM you for email addresses... ;)

Oh and Manque, short stuff is okay too... we can put that up as well!

I might be interested. Anything that could possibly bring in extra money, no matter how little would be good right now.
