Everyone knows that at times of deep, national disunity and peril, the candidacies of rangy, fledgling, long-shot, smooth-talkin', funny-named gentlemen from Illinois never amount to a damn thing anyway. ;)

But, but, but Abe was 52 when he took office. He's waaaaay older than Obama.

Maybe, but that's, like, 80 in 2008 years. ;)

And Abe didn't have any experience except two years in the US House and 8 years in the Illinois House! That isn't nearly enough to run a country -- or a war! AND, he was a Republican!

He's also being compared to McGovern so don't get too confident.

No, first McGovern voted for the war in Viet Nam and then he was against it. He was 50 when he ran for president but had been in the House and Senate for 24 years, most in the Senate. He was also a veteran. He was also from South Dakota where the only black are the hills.

Sounds more like a combo of Clinton and McCain to me...

The way I see it, from another country.

Look at Bush's election

the country is pretty much evenly divided between Rep and Dem

Now the republicans are going to vote for their own man, thats a given.

The Democrats are going to have, either a black guy, or a woman to vote for.
Mostly, they are probably ok with either choice. No gender or racist bias.

But, you know dam well that there are a few that will be bothered with it.
Not enough to make them change to republican, that just wouldn't be right.
But, possibly enough to make them say, hmmmm, I really don't want to give him/her my vote, so, I just won't bother voting.

Now, you get a few republicans that normally don't bother to vote. But, they really don't want either possible Democrat running things. They get out and vote, cause this time, it may really count.

Well guess what, a couple of points and you have a Republican Government all over again.

Wouldn't suprise me a bit

I guess I'm stepping too far ahead right now though eh
