NY gov apologizes, but quiet on scandal

NEW YORK - Gov. Eliot Spitzer, accused in news reports of being involved in a prostitution ring, apologized to his family and the public on Monday at a hastily called news conference. He did not elaborate on the story.

With his wife at his side, Spitzer told reporters that he "acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family."

"I have disappointed and failed to live up to the standard I expected of myself," he said. "I must now dedicate some time to regain the trust of my family."

The New York Times reported earlier in the day that Spitzer told senior administration officials that he was linked to a prostitiution ring. The report cited an anonymous administration official.

The Times reported that a person with knowledge of the governor's role believes the governor is identified in court papers as a client of a prostitution ring. Four people allegedly connected to a high-end ring called the Emperors Club VIP were arrested last week.

The Web site of the Emperors Club VIP displays photographs of scantily clad women with their faces hidden. It also shows hourly rates depending on whether the prostitutes were rated with one diamond, the lowest ranking, or seven diamonds, the highest. The most highly ranked prostitutes cost $5,500 an hour, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said the defendants arranged connections between wealthy men and more than 50 prostitutes in New York, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Miami, London and Paris.

The Times reported that the governor's travel records show he was in Washington in mid-February, and that one of the clients arranged to meet with a prostitute on the night of Feb. 13.

The case is being handled by prosecutors in the Public Corruption unit of U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia's office. Garcia spokeswoman Yusill Scribner said the office had no comment.

Around a stunned state Capitol in Albany, lawmakers and staff huddled around televisions to see the news conference. A media mob gathered outside the office of Lt. Gov. David Paterson, who would become governor if Spitzer was to resign.

Spitzer, 48, built his political reputation on rooting out corruption, including several headline-making battles with Wall Street while serving as attorney general. He stormed into the governor's office in 2006 with a historic share of the vote, vowing to continue his no-nonsense approach to fixing one of the nation's worst governments.

Time magazine had named him "Crusader of the Year" when he was attorney general and the tabloids proclaimed him "Eliot Ness."

But his stint as governor has been marred by several problems, including an unpopular plan to grant driver's licenses to illegal immigrants and a plot by his aides to smear Spitzer's main Republican nemesis.

Spitzer had been expected to testify to the state Public Integrity Commission he had created to answer for his role in the scandal, in which his aides were accused of misusing state police to compile travel records to embarrass Senate Republican leader Joseph Bruno.

Spitzer had served two terms as attorney general where he pursued criminal and civil cases and cracked down on misconduct and conflicts of interests on Wall Street and in corporate America. He had previously been a prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, handling organized crime and white-collar crime cases.

His cases as state attorney general included a few criminal prosecutions of prostitution rings and into tourism involving prostitutes.

In 2004, he was part of an investigation of an escort service in New York City that resulted in the arrest of 18 people on charges of promoting prostitution and related charges.

Haven't we all failed to live up to the standard we expected from ourselves at one time or another?

Why couldn't he just say the prostitutes will do things to him that his wife refuses to do?

OMG, they discovered he's a politician?!

(State governments are the biggest prostitution rings in existance.)

(I take it back - that's an insult to honest whores.)

Yet another reason to legalize prostitution. Can you imagine the windfall taxing this profession would bring into the state coffers?

That has been my standpoint for a while now. And he was in a perfect position to stand up against the law, and he blew it by acting like he was wrong for going.

It's legal in the UK.

It's not legal to solicit on the street or to live on the immoral earnings of someone else.

One of our local whores joined our Chamber of Commerce. Why not? She was providing a service to our community and declaring her earnings as a self-employed single-woman business.

She didn't offer discounts to her fellow Chamber members.

Og (Vice President)

Why do the guilty opt for the "I was wrong to do such a thing? I only hope my family can forgive me?" excuse. What happened to "I like to have sex with strangers?"

Oh, I forgot God does not approve. And neither do wives in America. Which has the more weight, I wonder? With American women having so much money power at this time in history, I would bet on the latter.

It seems women are more tolerant of men's philandering in Europe than here. Is it the current Christian 'Holier than thou' attitude that is driving this insanity? Men like to sample. Women like to sample. It has been going on for thousands of years. This is not a new pattern.

"I have disappointed and failed to live up to the standard I expected of myself,"
$5,500-per-hour hookers sounds like a high standard to me.

It's not like he was picking up $20.00 crack whores off the sidewalk.

This guy's campaign had to do with morality...I think he ought to step down...he embarrassed his wife and his family. He's got 3 daughters for christ's sake. If he weren't a public figure, he could do what he wanted, but he's got to be good. This is the life he chose.

He's got to be good? Was Bill Clinton good? Ask Monica. Was JFK good? We can't ask Marilyn. This is not new behavior for politicians, nor pulpit pounders.

It's simple history. Wealthy and powerful men have more than one sex partner because they're wealthy and powerful, something that attracts women. Will the day come when wealthy and powerful women can attract men with their wealth and power? Possibly, but I wouldn't fuck Hillary for as much money as you can see. Gack! Nor Barbara Boxer, for that matter.

But, when the women in office look really goodand are somewhat youngish, we may see this trend among female politicians. They probably won't cheat, though, just divorce and marry the young stud, ala Demi Moore, which is much more fashionable and ladylike.

My hat is off to France's President. He married the model he was probably seeing on the sly before he got divorced. All of this happening after he got elected, of course. He was happily married, or so many believed, during his campaign.

Yes, powerful, wealthy men attract women. It is how women improve the gene pool, often without conscious knowledge. Ain't it grand?

Volup,

This is off thread. I just checked out your profile and saw that whopping fish you are holding. Where are you?

I live in way Northern California on the Upper Sacramento River, above the dam, of course. It is not so much a river up here as a big creek. Some of the best rainbow trout fishing in the world.

I do not fish. Being a woman, I can't stand to see them gasp their red gills at me and I can't bash them over the head to ease their pain. I really am not a big fan of trout, but salmon, especially smoked the Indian way is the best thing on the planet. And I am 95% vegetarian. I just confessed my 5% weakness.

Confessing ain't so bad. Maybe the governor should have tried the whole truth and not just part of it. I expect we will hear more about the NY Governor and the prostitutes before the press is done. There, we are back on thread.

I find mself unable to take a position in this matter until I at least see nude pictures of the whore Spitzer is accused of partying with. [I am talking professional quality 8X10 glossies, not el cheapo snapshots.]

 Marilyn says "YES!"

It so does not make sense to me. Any man who has the balls-- the sheer testosterone-- that it takes to become president, is going to get laid. And if a man like that doesn't get laid? His constituents will not be well-served.

I agree with Stella on that. JFK looked like he knew what he was doing in more ways than one.

Of course the French are giggling at the Americans again on this.

i heard one interviewed legislator say, 'well it was an illegal act' (soliticiting) [so he should resign]-- the idea was that this was no affair or Lewinsky type boff, which is legal.

hard to resist saying, 'only in america.' where else to they have such laws? i'm guessing: saudi arabia and cuba.

Notice haow so many are being lienient? He's a Dem. If it was a Rep. they'd all be calling for public castration. A bit Two faced.

Good has nothing to do with it. If I understand this, our guy was a client of these prostitutes, that means he was paying out $5,500 an hour. For that he can be the worst lover in the world.

Actually, his hypocrisy is sickening, since he'd campaigned on a morals platform.

But the topic here is how that hypocrisy should be unnecessary.

Better not be taxpayer's money!

Who is "many"? It only came to light at about 1 pm today. A little quick on the draw about there not being reaction.

But this example has little to do with the recent Republican dillados, which have mostly involved same sex and children. Not the same thing at all.

Although, no, it is against the law in the States, and it's come to light in reference to a federal investigation. Mustn't be guilty of premature prognostication just to try to make this yet another cheap us/them issue.

When I first heard about this, I thought they were saying he managed a ring of prostitutes, which would have been shocking. The fact that this man pays a call girl, or whatever she is, seems like no big deal to me. I mean, what man has never paid for sex? The price makes it unusual, but the principal is the same.

From another POV, dallying with a call girl is better than having an affair like JFK or Clinton. Usually, it's a lot less messy, especially when the man is out of town. JFK got away with it because he got a pass from the news media, which he wouldn't get now.

Women are attracted to rich and powerful men like ants to sugar, but the reverse is not true. As more and more women rise to power, that might change, but I don't expect it, at least not for a long time.

From what I heard, he actually paid $4,300, meaning she was one of the second class girls. That's still a lot of money, but wther she was worth it would be up to the man involved. The gov. must have thought so, because, I understand, he paid for her to be brought from NY to Wash., which just might a violation of the Mann Act. That would be a much more serious crime, although I'm not sure the law hasn't been changed. It was intended to stamp out White slavery, and it worked, but then it was used against men who went from NY to Atlantic City or LA to Las Vegas with their hotsies, which was never the intention.
