Pancake mix recalled

I used to have a fifteen year old box of Aunt Jamima in my cupboard. I don't think it was included in the recall though. I kept it just because everyone else thought it should be thrown away.

We have been using Bisquick for the time since that box was bought. And no, none of it is anywhere near that old. It gets rotated enough throughout the year and is replenished often.

There's a baking products company called "Aunt Jemima"??

Hope my daughter never finds out

Oh yes. It's been around as long as I can remember. Although we use Bisquick or Pioneer in my house. You'd think that the heat of cooking would fix the germs.

Last week, it was school hamburgers made from sick (and abused) cattle. Last year, it was spinach. Now it's our pancakes.

If we can't trust our pancakes, who can we trust?

Have worked in grocery store setting for about 12 years. Do you know that any of the mixes (pancake, bisquick, cake mixes, etc.) that are out dated can KILL a kid if it has gone rancid? The bacteria in them is highly toxic. If baby formula is found to be outdated and on a shelf for sale, the store can be closed by the state. If you have any outdated, please don't chance it. I read in Dear Abbey that a teenager made pancakes and said they tasted funny, and died two days later from it.

That's good to know. I always empty my flour, Bisquick etc. into airtight containers after they're opened, so I don't even know the expiration dates. I guess I'll have to toss out some stuff.

That's why I make pancakes from scratch. It's not that much effort, really. And much more tasty. :)

My great-grandfather invented pre-made pancake mix. Anyone ever tried Coyote Pancake Mix?

Omen

This is an Omen. This thread will be my next story. It's full of tension, fear, subtext, substance and plot tists galore.

My box is clean! lol

Seriously folks, Samonella (sp) is not something to mess with! I worked in a hospital for mentally handicapped adults and there was an outbreak. If I remember correctly 3 died, but most of the hospital ended up sick, including the workers. My mom worked there too, she was off for almost a month. It really made me hate Jello and gingerale.

Was there salmonella in the Jello and ginger ale, or are you using the incident to rationalize an unrelated prejudice? :D
