I have a story that's up and I want to edit. I know you're supposed to add EDIT in the title, but there isn't enough room left. I think there's room left for only one letter.

What should I do?

Good question. Don't have an answer, but have wondered that myself--so am looking forward to seeing what the answer is as well.

Truncate the title by as many letters as you need to to fit an ellipsis and "-- EDIT" into the alloted space, but do NOT delete any chapter number if you have several chapters with the same title.

"My incredibly long story title that just barely fits the title field" would become

"My incredibly long story title that just barely fits the ... -- EDIT"

But

"My incredibly long story title that just barely fits Ch 69" would become

"My incredibly long story title that just barely ... Ch 69 -- EDIT"

ETA: you have to leave enough of the full title to unambiguously identify the story being edited, so where you prune characters should be carefuly considered if they might cause confusion.

Think of it as composing a search term that will turn up the correct story and ONLY the correct story.

Thanks Harold, that sounds like the solution! But about 30 minutes ago I sent a pm to Laurel about this so it would probably be polite on my part to wait for the boss's word before I go ahead and submit my edit. What do you think?

I "think" my answer was derived from a conversation with Laurel when the "submit withthe same title plus edit" process was first developed, so I'm guessing that her answer is going to be fairly close to mine. :p

You can always cancel the submission if she has changed her mind over the several years since our discussion, but I expect that you'll just add a couple of days to the process by waiting.

Thanks for answering this question.

I've been wondering about it myself.
