She was banned from the US during the Grammy awards, but she did appear on them by remote. As for not granting a visa to somebody with a criminal background, that's pretty much SOP.

I don't think she was banned, at least that wasn't the issue at the time. She was in rehab in England and allowed to perform by remote.

I don't really pay much attention to musical awards and suchlike, but it was my understanding that she had been refused a visa because of illegal drug activities. I do know that she appeared on TV by remote.

I don't know about "rehab" for celebs in England, but in the US, it amounts to spending a few days at a luxury resort. It tends to do about as much good too.

No, I didn't mean to be laughing at or ridiculing her drug problems. Having never had to deal with anything even remotely like that, I can't imagine the journey to wellness. To laugh at her trying to progress, that is just wrong.

I more so chuckle at her persona, or the crazy get-up she projects out to the public. Weird-ass hair a mile high, makeup that certainly wouldn't be considered becoming... and so forth. That would be a little easier to rectify, no? I'm thinkin' soap, water, wash cloth... hair brush...it could be a good thing! It is amazing to me that the voice ishe possesses is able to emmanate from there. I expected her to be much, much older when I first heard her. The old school sound she has didn't seem to fit her in my mind. Still, gotta love it. (projecting GetWell soon wishes toward her)

The sad hypocrisy of it is that she seems to flaunt her drug problems, where the music industry prefers that their stars keep things on the down low (in so much as they can). At the very least, the standard seems to be that they shouldn't be strutting it about as she does. Not saying it's right, but I think that's why so many are like "ZOMG she's out of control!" Freaks, all of them.

I think that some druggy pop stars only do it because they're terrified of becoming dull and complacent. They desperately need to keep an "edge" -- or at least an image of having an edge.
This is specially true, I think, in Britain, where fashion changes quickly and staying popular whilst maintaining street-credibilty is walking a knife-edge.

Having said that, heroin has been the drug of choice for busy, stressed and overstretched musicians on the road since the days of the Chitlin' Curcuit in the 1920's. With cocaine, (later amphetamines) and heroin, people could endure punishing tour and gig schedules.

I think it's more along the lines of being something no one likes to talk about, no one likes to acknowledge, and everyone pretends doesn't happen. We KNOW it happens, we KNOW musicians use drugs excessively, but the message that their culture (the music industry culture, that is) seems to be giving them is that "As long as no one finds out you're doing it, you can do whatever you want. But as soon as the public finds out you're doing drugs, we're going to have to drop the hammer on you."

The bad part is that the musicians go along with this. If they get caught, they make a big deal of going into rehab, making profuse apologies, and then going back to work on their next big album. Amy Winehouse seems, in my opinion, to have given this unwritten rule the proverbial finger and the culture of the music industry isn't happy about it.

Amy seems to be giving everything and everybody the finger, which is understandable, coming from her position. Beautifully stacked women seem to have a hard time in life, because they always get what they want, and they have no concept of the boundaries normal people have to deal with.
The first thing she needs to do is learn how to write a good song, but that would take a measure of maturity she may never possess. She'll probably continue to bull her way through on the strength of her voice and her excellent backup band. I know one thing, I'm not buying another one of her CD's until she progresses as an artist, either by learning the songwriting craft or covering songs written by real songwriters.
I put her at the level of beginning writers around here who think nothing of laying out 3 paragraphs of backstory before they start a story - rookie mistakes made by green writers. But, being beautifully stacked, do you think she's going to listen to anyone but her own muse?
I wish her good luck, and I wish she'd sing with a little more heart and a little less 'up-yours' attitude.
