Hi,

I plan to submit my story, which contains bolds and italics, via my profile. It's stated in the FAQ that it must then be submitted in .doc or .rtf format.

When I "save as" in MS word 2002, there's a list of options in the "save as type" field. Which options are the .doc and .rtf formats? Is that the Word Document and Rich Text Format options respectively?

Just want to be sure and not find out 6 days later that I made a mistake.

Thanks,

August

Yes, Word Document saves as a .doc, and Rich Text Format saves as a .rtf file.

You can also use the html instructions for bold <b> </b> and italics <i> </i> in your document and then just copy and paste it.

Yes, and yes. :)

If you know how to write very simple html, you are better off doing a copy-and-paste into the text box. It seems to make the process go a little faster.

To make your text bold, put these symbols in front; <strong> and these in back of the text; </strong>

To make italics, put <em> and </em>

Make SURE you look at preview the WHOLE text before you hit submit!!!!

YOu can use <b> and <i> as darkside has suggested as well.

Oh sure, show of your <strong> and <em>. Seriously, is there any difference between the two? <b> and <strong> and <i> and <em>?

You can manually format the italics and bold and submit using C&P or plain text format -- which will reduce the wait slightly.

I would NOT use RTF format unless you know enough about the format to clean it up before submission -- (RTF format normally contains traces of every little edit and typo from the time you typed the first word .) Most complaints I see here in the forums about stories not posting properly were submitted in RTF format.

If you have MSWord, the format the story is saved in between edits is the correct "DOC" format. If you are writing in WordPad, the native wordpad format is also a Word DOC format that is acceptable. (MSWord 6.0 format to be precise.)

the RTF option exists primarily for writers who are NOT using MSWord or WordPad and have to convert from their native file format for submissions.

There isn't a difference you're likely to notice because most modern browsers use Bolding to implement the STRONG tag and Italics to implement the EMphasize tag -- but the browser does have the option of implementing STRONG and EMphasize with different font, font size, color, or spacing if the programmer so chooses.

Thank you so much for your replies. I might go with the old fashioned .doc format as I'm not savvy with html etc.

ETA:

What's the time difference in submitting it via cut & paste versus uploading the story?

Say I do the C&P method from the word document, do I keep the italicized text as is and just do <b> text </b> or do remove the italics/bolds in the original word document, doing the <b> text </b> ?

C&P should be all plain, with the tags in, instead of the bolds and italics. <b> and <i> will give you bold and italic. Higher-order characters, like é and £ will work in the .txt format, usually, but USE THE PREVIEW and check everything.

Some text editors insert hard carriage returns, so check that, especially.

I only submit in .doc format, mainly because I have a tendency to use a lot of bold and italics, and I don't want to go through the document and insert all the HTML tags. Stories take anywhere from four to eight days when I submit them (must take about six), which I am comfortable with. Any advantage of using cut and paste, for me, is offset by being able to keep the story formatted the way I like it. It's not perfect, but I'm happy with it.

I think the time might be a little bit shorter-- yes? no? Anyone else have a different opinion?

When you copy and paste, the typography will disappear, leaving only the what you've typed... To keep track, I generally leave the italics and bolded in place and surround them with the <> tags in the document.

You don't have to insert the tags separately for each time you use the italic or bold style. Here's something I have saved in a file on my computer and use every time I submit a story. Link.

That's way cool. I always knew there was some way to make the computer do the work!

Hmm. Maybe I'll try it.

But I have a tendency to stick with what's worked so far. ;)

slyc, You don't have to. I just linked it because I find it very useful and thought others might too. :) And because I miss the mad doctor...

I followed your advice on how to submit via the C&P method and I think it went well! I also tried the Replace/Find shortcut, while it's very good, it's not 100% foolproof. You definitely still have to preview the text carefully. In my case it was easier to format the italics (only 11) myself than clean up after the automatic Replace.

New question.

Can I change the font size of a word? I might post this under a different thread.

Thanks a bunch,

August

Not on Lit.

I should clarify that a bit becaue it is possible to get an exception to Lit's "Look and Feel" if youcn convince Laurel that there is a pressing Literary need to enable the <Font Size=...> HTML tag in your story for a single word or phrase.

It would take a specific intevention to enable the tag for your story because the standard font and font size is part of the style sheet that makes all literotica stories "look and feel" the same.
