I love cars. I'm a car buff. I'm not mechanically, I just love reading about new cars and driving them.

In this thread, let's talk about cars.

I've always subscribed to all the magazines, AutoWeek, Motor Trend, Car and Driver, Road & Track, and Automobile.

Because I knew so much about new cars, I started a business, a new car buying service, where I took people down to the dealership and negotiated the price of a new car with the salesperson, on their behalf. I'd charge the person $100-200 and received a kick back from the dealership for $100.

Unfortunately with the global automobile and the advent of the Internet, the day of haggling deep discounts are gone. Nonetheless, I still love talking about new cars.

Presently, I'm in the market for a new car and am open to some suggestions.

I love the BMW 335xi coupe with the Recaro seat and bigger wheels sports package, but it's kind of pricey. I love the looks of the Infiniti G37 coupe. but the BMW is a better car.

My girlfriend just bought a Mini Cooper S and I love the car. I love how you can customize the car more than any other model other than a Rolls Royce of Bentley. If I money, I'd buy a Bentley or a Maserati. Now, those are cars.

Still, the Mini Cooper S is a fun car and it gets unbelievable gas mileage. She gets 40 on the highway and 30 in the city.

Then, again, I love Mustangs. I've owned 3 GT's. They are the best bang for the buck.

General Motors is coming out with the Camaro. I nearly bought a GTO when they came out a few years ago. The driver's seat was the most comfortable seat I've sat in, including the Recaro seat in my Mustang. But, when I heard that they weren't very safe in a side impact crash, I decided to hold off.

Now, I have no idea what to buy. I like so many cars. Definitely, now that my kids are grown, I'd want a 2 door. Gas mileage isn't that important to me, as I only drive about 8,000 miles a year and only work 5 miles from my house, round trip.

The new Volkswagen GTI's received good reviews but they are expensive to maintain. The Mini Cooper, like the BMW's receive free service for 50,000 miles/4 years.

Any thoughts?

This is really embarassing.

Now, this is really embarrassing. No one has posted to this thread. I really figured some of you people owned a car.

I had no idea that the bunch of you rode around on bicycles ala Sean Connery in Finding Forrester.

I should have known that a bunch of writers wouldn't be able to afford an automobile (lol).

Oh, wel...

Oh, wel...

I can afford both L's...

I was never a grease monkey. Yeah, I fooled around under the hood in my teens and twenties, because why pay someone else to do an oil change if I could do it. But I'm no gear head. Thus, the "car buff" reference threw me off.

I think a Cooper Mini would be a sweet city car... but I prefer trucks. Always have. I have an SUV (Pathfinder) because I needed to compromise with the realities of being a parent.

torque steer

The thing I don't like about the Mini Cooper is the torque steer. When you step on the gas and the turbo kicks in, you had better be holding on to the steering wheel because it will veer off to the left.

After driving rear wheel drive Camaros and Mustangs, I'm not used to front wheel drive cars that have some balls. My girlfriend would have killed me if I wiped out her new Mini Cooper.

It's surprising how much room the interior has. My friend who is 6'7" sat in the back seat.

It handles like a rollerskate.

I drive a minivan, and at this moment, I'll guarantee that I could put together an entire box of 24 Crayola crayons, a bag of skittles, and probably half an order of fries from the debris on the floor.

Is it big enough to cart me and my crew around? Yes, good.

Does it have certain bells and whistles I like? Yes, good. No, keep looking.

Is it cool? No, it's paid for, runs well, and gets good mileage.
