My philosophy class discussed this the other day. Setting aside the religious aspect of the discussion, which of the Seven Deadly Sins do you think are the worst? Which are you most guilty of possessing?

Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individuals recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.

Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation.

Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.

Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.

Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath.

Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness.

Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.

I was going to say "Sloth", but since I am the first one to reply here, I guess that one doesn't really work.

I would have to go with this. Once one loses God the rest of the deadly sins become life.

When pride is justified, it is not a sin, it is merely reality. But those with low self esteem tend to bristle at anyone who dares to feel good about themselves or their accomplishments.
When pride is misplaced, it is simply stupidity.

Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation.

That one is probably one of the worst in my book because it causes people to commit the worst atrocities. It usually goes hand in hand with greed.

Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.

Lack of self control. More of an embarrassing trait of character than an outright sin.

Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.

Mmmmmmmm..... LUST. Wonderful, hedonistic lust. Not a sin, so I'd tell whoever came up with that one to go fuck themselves and enjoy it.

Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath.

No, that one is good: Anger is the mind's way of telling you something is wrong. It is also wonderfully cleansing when used to take action to right a wrong. People are often afraid of anger, but they should not be. Those who never release/show anger are usually repressed time bombs waiting to go off, which is a lot worse, IMHO.

Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness.

Envy's inevitable side kick. Theft murder and worse things have been committed in its name. It is also a constant drain on one's ability to feel content. Poisonous.

Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.

When laziness contributes to things like parental neglect, that means big trouble down the line. Laziness that only affects the lazy is their problem, I can't get bent out of shape over that one.

Explain. First to post means wrong:confused:

Reconsider. From a purely religious point of view only God is real and personal pride is never justified. If personal pride is justified it is only by using those of low self esteem as the measure.

Hello?

Hello?

Fuck God and the controlling weak minded bitches he rode in on. Organized religion came up with many ways to mind fuck the masses into living as they were told, and the destruction of self esteem is one such tool. People who know their worth and feel good about it are not nearly as easy to control as those who feel worthless and cannot live without a spiritual crutch.

The seven deadly sins are outdated and boring.

Let's draft a new list.

I say envy, because it robs you of the ability to be content with who you are. I think back to how much I might have enjoyed my teens and early twenties if I had just been content to be me and not envied the traits and lives of others.

i agree when it comes to the seven.
they're basic parts of human nature.
they all serve a purpose in society, in survival.
it's a way of making people feel like they're never good enough...because they never can be.

it's like making "having a head" a deadly sin.

and pushes you to improve your life.
and to teach yourself new things.
to experiment, to educate yourself.

God and religion are somewhat separate. Religion is mans device so do not take it out on God. Notice I wrote, "setting aside the religious aspect....." in the original posting.

i have them all.
they're natural.

I'm with dolf - all of these traits are human, we all have them at different times. It's just about trying not to act on them in a malicious way. Maybe we could apply that whole "do onto others" tennet in this case...

I think there is a difference between wanting to better yourself and wanting what belongs to someone else. I don't see being driven as the same thing as being envious. Being driven is about intrinsic motivation, envy is extrinsic. Being able to change and grow and learn doesn't have to be tied to envy.

The only ones that dont apply to my life are Envy, Greed, and Sloth...Ive been described as being mostly Wrathful, which would condemn me to the fifth level of hell.

envy doesn't mean taking what they have.
envy means wanting what they have.
i envy those who can sing, so perhaps i'll take lessons.
taking would be theft. wanting would be human nature.

Thanks. That's where I was coming from.

Where do we start?

Will give that some thought. Probably a good first position.

I think greed is the absolute worst. It has the potential for screwing over the greatest number of people. I think it can lead to at least some of the others. As for the ones I'm most guilty of having, its probably a tie between pride and anger. Pride not in necessarily the traditional awesome sense, but as in "Yeah, I can fend for myself. Don't really need you.", because of various events that have happened in my life. If I do something awesome though, I'm proud of it. Anger, because come on....what reasonable person doesn't occasionally get angry if something rubs them the wrong way? I find those two sometimes to be necessary or else a person might go mad. Not that I'm a boastful, angry man by any means. But I don't consider myself greedy, (terribly) lustful, lazy, envious or gluttonous.
