This is a break out from another (reviled) thread.

What is the point of the Favourites Lists? Yes, we all know they show the authors/stories/poems that the most readers have included as favourites. But do the lists actually mean anything?

From that other thread:

My opinion, for what it's worth. I personally think that the Favorite's Portal needs to go the way of the Hudson Hornet. I don't think it serves any purpose of value.

I pulled my Montana Summer series because of Scouries, and his list. I pulled the rest of my work to get off the Favorites List.

Perhaps it will. I think it really means very little, when it comes down to it. As people have been trying to get Mr. Scouries to understand for over a year now, popularity is not necessarily a marker of good - and certainly not "the best" - writing.

And there are far, far, FAR better writers down the list than me.

Damnit, I have to stop replying on this thread! Bad Selena, Bad!

I've found the "favorite author" portal useful. When a poster claims to be so much more popular a writer here than someone else--the Favorite's Portal is very useful--especially when it's found that this "so much more popular storywriter" isn't even on the top 250 list.

The favourites portal is not even easy to find. Unless you know it's there, you'd never hunt it down.
So what's the point?

I haven't the foggiest idea. I've never used it and I doubt it anyone has me listed on their favorites list, either.

Actually I got an email from a new reader (new to the site too). She was wondering if I would update my favorites list for her.

I guess she has found that if she finds an author she likes she checks out the stories and authors on their favorites list. Her reason being that the good authors know and read other good authors.

I had never thought about it like that before.:cattail:

That's how I found many of my authors on here...
It's also an easy way to find your faves again when ur in a reading mood.

Oh, yeah. I forgot. Some newbie asked if he could add me to his buddy list. Does that count?

I found it once but I'll be danged if I can find it again

I didn't even know it existed until someone wrote a story about it here and caused a little dustup that told me what the list was and where it was. I got along without it before, and although I've found a good use for recently, whether or not it exists doesn't mean that much to me.

It might be a faster way to get to the story list of a specifically known author than using the search mechanism, though.

I think the Buddy list is something different--and I don' t understand what that one does for you at all.

The "favoritest authors" list (which you can access from the main page (it's listed as a "sneak peek")) might help readers find the most popular authors, that is, those authors who members have most often listed as their favorites. The "favoritest stories" list appears to be largely a list of the most strokeworthy incest stories.

It is the easiest way to find the works of an author who you suspect might be popular. Its use of "favoritest," however, should be enough by itself to banish it to one of the lower levels of Hell.

Actually I do that all the time. I even look at the favorites of people who have commented on my stuff. My reasoning being that if they read my stuff then they might have found other stuff like mine. Since I obviously tend to be interested in the stuff I write then the other people who someone reads might be something like that. I don't know if that made sense. I'm pretty tired.
Sometimes it works... Sometimes not... But I've found some good stuff I might now have located randomly that way...

Who is Scouries? Why does his or her list matter? I've been out of touch.

He who shall not be named is a whakko loon with delusions of grandeur. His lists are another pump blowing fetid air into his enormous ego. Save yourself some grief. Just put him on ignore now so you won't even see the threads when they float back to the top of the bowl.

Let's all keep flushing (eg: ignoring) so they don't! :D

I keep the ignore off so that I know where the thread is. That way, I can bump stuff under it until it sinks into the oblivion of page two as quickly as possible ;)

What? Is this, like, Yahweh we're talking about? Scouries scouries scouries. There. I said it. Nothing happened.

Just don't blame me when you accidently summon our local Golgathan.

( See the film "Dogma" if you miss the reference *laugh* )

back to the *cough* original topic-- I assume that thing is a relic from the early days of Lit. back when it was just growing. Webmasters and webmistresses try all kinds of kooky SEO tricks.

Oh, it's something old? It's written up on the home page as if it's something they are just ready to launch.

That notice has been here as long as I have, I believe. It might very well be part of the favorites related changes going on now, though. Could possibly become a normal part of the toplists as things progress.

I'll tell you, srplt77 wasn't all that far out when he accused me of removing my work because of danielle and scouries.

All this haranguing about who has more hundreds of votes-- my most voted story (regardless of score) had thirty-six. It kinda told me that my audience isn't here, and I needed to go find them.
how many favorite stories are incest out of that hundred?

You know, I just had that conversation about audience with someone earlier in the week. I kinda figure mine's not really here either, but I don't quite know where it is.

Actually, Scabies is rather high on the list. I'm there too, but in the lower half.

It's a very sore subject, dear, addressed on another thread.
