Now that I've cleared Caravaggio from my mind, I also find it quite evocative of David's "Death of Marat". Perhaps a combination of the literary theme, play of light, etc.

I looked long at Death of Marat as well. And I looked at Caravaggio's David and Goliath.
None are the one I'm thinking of.
