I am starting to get a little fed up with editors not responding when you try to contact them. I have contacted 4 editors and not had a responce of any of them. If they don't think they can edit my story all they have to do is tell me, not ignore me.

Hi,

I'm sorry that you've had so many problems finding an editor. The easiest way to find an editor is to make sure they're still editing (look at when they've updated their editing profile; the closer to the top they are, the most luck you'll have). Maybe you could also give them a bit of informations on what kind of editing you need (just grammar and spelling? Story format? Content and forms? Believability of your characters? etc...) The more informations you'll give the more luck you'll have in finding one.

Furthermore, you could also post a request here. One of our more prolific editor might see it and respond to your thread.

Good luck

I can only speak for myself but.....

Please remember that we VEs do have lives outside of our commitments here. I do try to give a heads up to my writers if things get out of control and I need time away from editing for some reason, but we all are human and do not always do it in a timely matter. I've been sick for the past couple of weeks and basically disappeared. Thankfully, my writers are very understanding and I got back to them as soon as I could.

It is possible that you've found some old profiles and those people didn't update email addresses or simply aren't editing anymore and didn't remove the profile.

You could post a thread here re: what you're looking for and what your story is about to see if anyone here has time. And you always have discretion; if an editor contacts you here and doesn't have the credentials you are looking for or is someone you don't want to work with you can say no and wait till someone else comes along.

Good luck with you editor search and your writing!

Sorry Lady C, it seems you posted a similar msg as I was writing mine. :)

Hope you are well!

No need for apology, Leila. We've said the same thing, it must mean that we know what we're talking about, huh? :p

Health is not at its best, but I'll pull through eventually. thanks for asking. :rose:
I see that you've been sick also, nothing major I hope.:(

It wouldn't hurt for him to turn his PM thingie on either, or emails for that matter.

Yeah, my attempt to use an editor was not successful either. I went through the list and found ones that I felt would work out best for me. I contacted them all in a polite email. Most did not respond but that's OK. I assumed that they are not active any more. About four did respond. Surprisingly, most of those had quite an attitude. One actually said that she would, "take it under advisement" as to whether or not she would review and edit my story. Whatever. Anyway, two agreed and I sent them the story. Neither ever responded back.

Certainly in my case, looking for an editor was not worth the effort.

I am sorry to those of you that are having problems finding editors. As laila said, a lot of the VE's do have lives outside of Lit and do not log in as often as is feasible to respond to PM's from authors looking for help.

I am generally always available as I do editing for my own company and will respond very quickly even if it is just to let you know that I have received your request and when I have time available to work with you.

I have several authors that I work with here on a fairly regular basis and would be more than happy to email them asking if they would vouch to my sincerity.

Feel free to PM me anytime if you have a work that you'd like help with.

Good luck on future searches.

I must agree that the most frustrating thing is when someone agrees to look at your story, you email it to them and you never hear from them again.

I also had an incredible editor that did a great job on the first four chapters on my story and then dropped off the face of the earth. No response to emails, no nothing.

I agree that the least they could do is drop a line to tell you they cant do it anymore. It is just rude. Luckily I am working with Sexylaila now, and she is great!!

How I overcame this same issue

I hope this helps WalkWolf2. I had the same issue with VE's. I used the list and had only a few replies. After sending these VE's my story I never heard from them again. I had given up finding an editor and started to post my stories anyways.

Then it happened, I posted a story and started to read the feedback and noticed that many of them pointed out problems with my grammar, and I admit i'm not very good with English. So as I was replying to these feedbacks, I started to asked if they would by chance be an editor. Guess what? I found three different people that had left feedback about my story that were VE's (editors).

I asked them for help in my feedback replies. I have now worked with two of these fine editors with great results. I hope that this advice helps any other authors that are having this problem. I have found that these VE's are very helpful and I want to thank every person that takes on the job of VE. Without these people's help, guys like me would never post. Thanks to all VE's.

Warning: Forgive any grammar mistakes above, this post was not edited.

I became a ve after having similar experiences... I don't always agree to edit stories if I feel that 1) they deal with stuff I have no understanding of, 2) they're so badly written that, short of rewriting, they can't be improved, or 3) my life's demands are too extreme at any given moment. I have always, though, answered requests and tried my best to be communicative. Strangely, though, I've only received 2 or 3 requests in the last 2 years or so...

Anyway, how does one update one's ve profile?

That might be a helpful bit of into to have!

xoxo

I'm Sorry, I'm Sorry, I'm So Freaking Sorry...

I bought my laptop 2 yeras ago, high-end so I can play the best games (like I have time to, LOL) and developed a keyboard problem (not good for a writer). Keyboard failed, used the warranty, lost my PC for 4 months and my keyboard still bad. But USB KB works.

OK, so I'm back in business (in a way). I'll entertain some editing, but I like to write as well. I already have writers I edit for, I'll do what I can.

Go to here; click on Log in near the top; look down the left hand list for Editors; below that click on Manage Profile; follow the instructions.

This has the added advantage of bringing your profile to the top of the list if someone is just browsing for an editor.

Sorry, but this page comes up with an error 0404, so cannot access the information. I am also looking for a VE, my work has been rejected for spelling, I am British so no surprise there then (I do not write in US) and also my dialogue needs attention whatever that means ...

Please could a suitable VE contact me so that I can continue to upload my work .... With many thanks ...

I don't know how many Lit reviewers there are who decide what's acceptable, and what isn't. Sometimes I suspect that what one person finds unacceptable is perfectly fine for another. Also, I believe that the people who review posts and approve or disapprove them should be looking for breaches of content rules, and for nothing else. There are lots of voices in the world, and many benefit from public feedback. I know that I have.

Anyway, I'd be interested to understand the approval process a bit better. Maybe I'll inquire.

Peace.

There are lots of threads on here and on the Authors' Hangout discussing this. RogueLurker's thread here is as good a place to start as any.

I found this sticky to be fairly informative, yet I feel as though the criteria spelled out in the "submission guidelines" do not address style, grammar, or other technical issues. If these are to be considered by the Site Editors as criteria for acceptance, they should be clearly spelled out as requirements in the "submission guidelines", not just things to consider when submitting.

What makes things more challenging, I think, is that I've had several writers tell me that, after receiving a rejection by a site editor, they resubmitted their story without any revisions, and had it accepted.

These apparent inconsistencies in the Site Editor's process can erode and undermine writers' confidence. We should encourage Laurel to change the guidelines, or work with the site editors and clarify their role.

If someone still needs an editior, I have a little time right now. :)

(please, though....no horrible grammer. It makes me grit my teeth, and my jaw aches)

Here's something. Last week I got an editor request and was sent a very long story. Personally, it was so bad that the scope of work needed was beyond mere editing. The author basically wanted me to rewrite the story, which I was unwilling to do. Am I being unreasonable? What I did was write back with two very specific suggestions for revision (dealing with good writing, not with grammar or other technical issues), asked the author to make changes based on those suggestions, and send it back to me.

Just so you can understand my response, here is the first page just as I received it:

Nusheen married with Aness's before 14 years. She was a young prettiest girl at that time but now after her marriage, 14 years had not taken away anything from her. She was still as beautiful as before, those years she became more beautiful, even more beautiful than at the time of her marriage, and that she was now at the peak of her beauty but even now her body was better than when they had gotten married. She was now a mature woman. The maturity and advancing age brought an unexplainable and unique glamour, elegance and grace in her personality. She looked like a good matured wine.

She was very health conscious and followed a healthy regimen of diet and exercise. This kept her body fit and youthful, and she looked almost a decade younger than her actual age. Even at that age she has no wrinkles on her face, her skin was smooth, shining and blemish less, her body was beautiful, energetic, daring and desirable, dominating, and fantastic. When she smiled her eyes sparkled and her nose twitched and blushed a little as the corners of her mouth turned up.

Nusheen was an extremely beautiful lady. She looked young for her age, particularly because of very smooth and wrinkle free glowing skin. A mother of three, two beautiful teenage and one seven years old, with the body of 34 years old, but built like a teen and she could make any man blood boil. She was one in a million.

Nusheen was tall and slim. She had a killer body. She was filled out in all the right places. She had a very pretty face with flashing large brown eyes, long eyelashes, and a finely shaped nose with a black mole on her upper lip, which made her look majestic. Her angelic face looked so innocent, but her best assets were a great set of full, firm, perky, perfect shape, and natural breasts, which she was always hiding them in shawl, and sweetest ass with round shapely buns. She had a flat and firm belly, and flared and wide hips on a narrow waist. She had creamy, white, blemish less, very smooth skin. She had smooth, slender, nicely turned arms and legs, and her hands and feet were shapely and elegant.

Her black silky straight hair fell just down to her hips. The slight tint in her black hair as the gray had just started to appear. Actually the appearance of the gray seemed to lend an air of confidence to the woman, she looked obviously comfortable with herself, unafraid of her age, in fact quite proud of her maturity.

She was the best stimulation for any man. One always wondered how breasts so full and a bottom so rounded could be wrapped around such a tight little waist. Or why this Venus would be balanced on legs so long and delicately crafted. She was simply a stunning pretty, sexy, smart and sensual woman. Every male, young and old, in the town was looking at Nusheen with desire. Her face and manner, her sensuous face made men want to fling her to the nearest bed and fuck her passionately. Even women alike stared at her whenever she went out. Nusheen was totally hot, but she also pretty sharp in the brain department.

I had a similar situation. The author whose story I edited didn't have any clue how to use punctuation and used the TAB key as opposed to the ENTER key for paragraphs, it was a nightmare.

I laid it out rather bluntly for him, even after cloudy's wonderful wording of telling the guy to learn to write.

Anyway, he seemed okay with my comments and said that if I didn't feel I wanted to edit any of his future stories he sent my way, he could understand.

Just break it to them gently that you do this for free and you haven't got time to re-write someone's work. Direct them to a few basic writing websites, give them tips on what to improve then have them send their story again. If it's still in need of a re-write, tell them politely that you cannot edit their work.

So basically, no, I don't think you're being unreasonable.

I've been submitting stories for almost a year now and when I finally decided to find a Volunteer Editor, I ran into the same problems as described; No Reply. I deliberately chose VE's who had recently signed up to make sure they might be "keeners", but still no luck. I have had one volunteer (a reader who corresponded with me), but he is ill and unlikely to be able to continue. I would appreciate any assistance that might be forthcoming.

I'm sorry you have had no success.

A link to your stories might be helpful, or at least a description of what categories your writing generally falls into.

Good luck :rose:
