General Political Discussion Thread

Feel free to continue the debate that started in several different threads. I just figure this may stop the hijackings....

for a while

I must be insane for suggesting this, since most of the political debate around here just gets me all worked up, but maybe the thread should be renamed (if possible) to be a general political thread, or U.S. election thread, if folks would like something slightly more narrow.

I respect that you don't want other threads to be hijacked, but I don't think the substance of the debate that will not die is voter registration.

I'd contribute to your thread, but at the moment I'm far too distracted by the mental image of Netzach workin' over O'Reilly in her backyard.

One question, if I may:

Am I correct to assume that one simply enters a polling station on election day and votes? No ID required? No question asked? No previous registration on electoral roll?

(Granted, that's four questions. You know how it goes, give an inch, take a mile).

well, you first fill out a voter registration card, and I believe all you need is a "valid" driver's license. Although thinking about it, I'm not sure I even had to show that. But then you're given this little "card" (more like a heavy piece of paper about the size of something you can shove in your wallet) and sign it. On election day, you give them your voter registration card (which by now is all kinds of bent and worn) and they look up your name and check their books and if the name is in there, you get to vote. They dont match the signature on the card with anything.

And absentee voting is even more secure (*sarcasm included*). Of course you have to have a good reason, but you apply for an absentee ballot and providing your name is on their list of registered voters, they send you this packet to punch through all your selections and then you mail it back.

I'd sell a kidney to watch that. Can we involve Hannity in this fantasy?

In Georgia all you need is one of 17 types of identification. Utility bill, paycheck, bank statement, Roger Ramjet fan club card.

in Oregon, if you're registered, you get a ballot in the mail a couple of weeks in advance, and merely need to mail it within a certain amount of time. There are drop boxes for the last minute 8pm-on-election-day voters, but for the most part any time is good enough.

We don't have cards, and I know you don't need a drivers license. You probably have to be registered with the state, but a driver? Unnecessary.

Kentucky surprisingly is pretty advanced in its election progress. Usually there is 100% precinct reporting within a few hours of the polls closing. No paper ballots, hanging chads, pregnant chads and whatever. Ever since I have been voting there has been done on some sort of electronic ballot machine.

I no longer recall what's necessary to register to vote in Illinois (please, no dead-people-voting jokes) but the procedure to actually cast your vote does involve a check of your registration card (or other signed ID such as a driver's license or Social Security card, and a signature match against the one on your voter registration card (or other signed ID). Here we have had experimental use of electronic voting for a couple of primary/general election cycles but I still elect the punched paper ballot for its security. These ballots are read by a scanner before being submitted for tabulation.

Thank you all for your answers.
Over here, it's more complicated, you have to register in the city you live (proof of ID, of nationality and of address required), then get your voter's card, that is checked again against your ID on election day.

I'm sorry, y'know, I'm fairly accepting of visuals in fantasy, but, wow, there is not a sexual or pseudo-sexual fantasy in existence in which I want the visual of Michael Moore.

And who needs imagination for Al Franken? We've already seen pics of him in adult baby get-up comeplete with diaper.

I just figured we needed some equal time for the liberals.

I haven't seen that and don't want to see that.. ugh.

How about Michael Moore and Al Frankien?

I don't want them on my team.

Franken is at least highly educated, which makes him kind of Bob Grant to Moore's Rush. Inflammatory dickweed, but at least not a moron. Michael Moore is everything I dislike about America - blue or red there's one born every minute who will listen to these people.

They can both get jackboots to the face too, I don't think anyone will begrudge me that.

Re: Hannity - I don't know where that's been. You'll have to provide me some protective gear in your circle jerk, gentlemen.

As much as I might agree with the tenor of Michael Moore's politics, I'm becoming very tired of his methodology. Franken, it seems to me, is a hybrid. He's part Pat Paulsen and part Ralph Nader.

As for Hannity, Netz I would take out a second (well, a third) mortgage to see you put him in his place. And while you're at it, could you put O'Reilly into suspension gear and whip his ass until he cries like a baby?

I specialize in "forced" bi, you know.

With regard to Xavier's suggestion, I say go ahead. Make it a quad.

That's perfect.

Hannity on Moore, O'Reilly on Franken.

Done, over, out. Tie it all up and leave them in a shed in that position.

Youtube it, of course.

To quote DeservingBitch's sigline "I'm so in love with this moment, I want to have sex with it." This image just becomes better and better.

And "forced" bi? Pure gold, Netzach :D

In Denmark you don't have to register to vote or anything. Once you've turned 18 and if you're have Danish nationalty and live in denmark, you will get a "voting card" in the mail, which tells you where you can go and vote on the election day. There is no restrictions what so ever if you're allowed to vote or not, the only rule is that you have to be 18 years old, and it doesn't matter if you have a record at all.

ETA: On the day of the election, you go to your designate place to vote, and there you present your voting card, and they give you a ballot in return. You then enter a cubicle where you put an X at either the party or the person you're voting on, and afterwards you put it into a locked container, which they take away after the voting is over, and manually count.
