Happy New Year's Day! I'm up and watching the Tournament of Roses Parade (re-run of the 8am actual event). Happens every New Year's morning, a huge parade in Pasadena, CA. Marching bands, horses, and floats decorated with plant matter (flower petals primarily).

The big disappointment this year...no stealth bomber! They usually start the parade with a fly over of airforce jets and a stealth bomber. Airforce jets but no bomber

This year's theme: "The World's Celebrations"--floats of things like Chinese New Year, and other interesting international celebrations. There was even an eponymous float celebrating the rose parade itself (it featured a huge rose which erupted in a spray of fireworks and streamers....I don't think I need to comment on that, do I?).

We've just had the Zurich Police Marching Band. Go Switzerland!

I will keep you all updated on the highlights. Carry on!

We've had an "Ocktoberfest" float and a Hawaiian luau float with dolphins and hula dancers in grass skirts and coconut-shell bras. Does nobody care? ;)

And we now have the Akashikita High School Green Band. From Japan. Yes, you read it right. Green Band. They're environmentally aware :)

Here's an odd bit o' trivia: I marched in the Rose Parade when I was a junior in high school. I was part of the Wyoming All State High School Marching Band.

We even wore cowboy hats.

And what instrument did you play? hmmm? Don't suppose you've got a pic? And do you still have the cowboy hat? ;)

Long march, the Rose Parade. Five miles.

My regular instrument was the clarinet (I played from middle through high school). However, for the parade the band director needed more drummers, so I took up drumming. :)
