Storing the ginger for a while allows it to age and get hotter. Google "figging" for ways to use it. Everybody is different, and not all will be affected the same way. But, don't be disappointed if the first time is less than you expected. Sometimes it just works better than others. Below are some things I've found that work best.

1) If you touch the white flesh of the ginger, you take away some of the hotness. Leave some of the skin on in an area that will not be touching skin, so you have an area to handle it with. Only shave the skin off of the section that will be inserted. That way, you don't waste any of the oil that seeps out.

2) Shave only the skin off, leaving as much of the root itself intact as possible. I understand you need to cut it into the shape of a plug or some other shape for use, but keep in mind that any of the white you shave off is also shaving off valuable heat producing oil.

3) Don't shave off the skin until just before you are ready to insert it.
If you shave it off and then wait for a period of time, the oil will seep out, and either dry up or evaporate to the point it won't be as hot. It's at its hotest right after the skin has been removed, and that fresh white flesh is exposed. As soon as you shave the skin off, the oil will start coming to the surface.

4) Don't run any water over the ginger, because that will dilute the oil as well as washing some of it off. Also, do not use any lube, as that will also dilute the oil. If the skin or tissue that is going to come in contact with the root is very dry, a little water can be added to make the surface moist. Moisten the tissue, not the root. Don't over do it. You only need enough moisture to help the oil flow and be absorbed by the tissue.

5) A tight fit is best, but with some people it doesn't matter. Experiment to find what works best for you. It is possible to reuse the ginger, depending on how large of a cutting you have. After use, the white flesh will tend to dry. Think of this as a new skin. Shaving off another thin layer can expose more fresh white flesh.

Not everybody is going to have the same result on the reuse. It might not be as hot the second time around, but don't just toss it away. You never know, until you try. If you want to wash it off first, wash it and let it dry before you shave it again.

The below link mentions washing and dipping the ginger in water. It has been my experience that this washes away the oil. Just keep this in mind when you experiment. Whatever works for you is obviously how you should do it.
