:( It's the saddest thing. She's been sneezing off and on for about three days now. No other real symptoms, that is, she has an appetite and is still fairly active, purrs and all the rest. But she keeps sneezing!

I don't know whether to take her to the vet or warm up some chicken soup.

Advice?

Give it another couple of days and watch her energy level and food and water intake very carefully. If she's still sneezing but nothing else has changed, you might want to take her to the vet just to be safe, but if her appetite/thirst changes or her energy drops, take her in right away.

Also keep an eye out to see if she develops a discharge from her eyes or nose...those would be another reason to take her in as soon as possible.

Exactly as Katyusha said. I did have a cat that sneezed quite regularly for her whole life. (She just passed away Thursday night of old age.) But if this a new thing, most likely just a cold. Just keep an eye out for new symptoms. :rose:

I would watch for this -

Tooth Abscesses
In both dogs and cats the third upper premolar tooth has roots that penetrate close to the nasal passages. If this tooth or the ones adjacent to it becomes infected, sneezing and nasal drainage are common signs.

It seems as long as there is no drainage or change in kitty behavior, everything is fine.

Our oldest cat sneezes now. The doctor checked him out, said that he may be developing nasal polyps. The treatment for that was surgery, around $1000 or so. We debated, but his symptoms lessened and it has not affected his appetite or behavior at all.

So we're just letting him be 17 years old and swat at the younger cats like the dear grumpy old guy he is.

Good luck with your baby.

:rose: for your loss.

I'm sorry to hear about your cat. :rose:

But I'm sure she had a good life with you.

How interesting. I bet that is why this cat sneezed so much. I got her when she was about two and her teeth were already a complete mess. We had to do repeated antibiotics with her because of it and she lost most of her teeth by the time she was ten. I think I did notice she didn't sneeze as much in recent times. It was probably her teeth problems that made her sneeze.

Thanks for your condolences Sarahh and Katyusha, but like I said, old age. She had a long hard life with her health problems. She didn't have much quality of life anymore but she went peacefully, that's as much as I could ask for.

It's come on so suddenly, and so frequently that I feel it might not be either tooth or polyp problem. I mean, one day she wasn't sneezing, the next she was sneezing away. I honestly did half-expect to see her get all listless with cold symptoms but she's not exhibiting any.

And wouldn't she be having a problem eating if her teeth were infected? Though she is long over due for a tooth cleaning.

*sigh* I'll wait out the weekend (unless, of course, she gets other symptoms). Poor kitty. She isn't sneezing continually, but she is sneezing a lot.

If your cat has a cold, you need some d@ck. Don't you think? I think that might make your cat feel all better again! If not, at least it will give you some relief.

Okay, not a cat, but still . . . .

When I was eight, we got a dog. A red, long-haired Dachshund named Nemo. Great dog, really. Loved to play, and scared people on the other side of the door with his bark (he had a set of lungs, lemme tell you).

When we moved from germany to Texas, he developed pretty serious allergies. It was not a pretty thing when he sneezed. I always thought, "where the hell does all that come from?"

We took him to a vet, who referred us to an allergist. Nothing she proscribed helped, unfortunately. Nemo never really seemed to be uncomfortable. Hell, I think he enjoyed sneezing, since his tail always wagged when he did it.

And he still lived to be seventeen years old. Not bad for a Dachshund.
