hi how can i downsize my pics to post,i know you must get this question all the time

Google IRFANVIEW, a free image editing program. As with any software, there's a learning curve, but it's not difficult to figure resizing/resampling and compression out in a few minutes. Also, because it's a Lit favorite, there are many here who can answer any questions about it.

I posted this a few weeks ago so here goes:

very simple and ANYONE can do it & yes this is how I change the size of my file. Every computer has paint (start / all programs / accessories / paint

1) open up your picture in paint
2) at the top you will see the word IMAGE
3) when you pull down image then select stretch / skew
4) horizontal = 100% & vertical = 100% (change both the same example: horizontal 50 & vertical 50)
5) if you went a little too much then click edit / undo

to check the size after you changed horizontal % & vertical %
1) with the picture still open this time under IMAGE you will notice attributes


After a few times you will be doing it without even thinking about it. Trust me it is very easy.

That works for the image's physical size, but it doesn't usually help if the file is too large. IIRC, Paint doesn't have a feature for reducing quality or saving as different file types, plus it lacks even the most basic editing capabilities.

Works for me too, but it's just a tad more expensive than Irfanview. (especially since Corel bought it from JASC.)

Almost any image editing program can resize picture and most can convert them to JPeG or GIF format. However, I fully concur with SweetErika's first answer in this thread:

The fact that IRFANVIEW is totally free as well as an extremely versatile image management program is just gravy compared to the number of people here that can provide assistance.

I can't seem to get the Search to work for me, but I recall there being a thread somewhere in Lit that allowed someone to attach a photo, and someone else would resize it and repost it. I even did that for a few people.

Alternatively, anybody who needs to resize pics but doesn't want to do it for whatever reason, send me a PM.

IRFANVIEW has a really easy to use batch conversion facility too, so you can resize and save in a different folder at a particular quality. I would imagine that if you set vertical size to 640 and quality to 70 they would pretty much all be acceptable for posting at lit.

As far as setting height to 640 pixels, that will stop every picture from uploading because the dimesnion limits are 800x600.

You had the right idea but the wrong number -- doing a batch conversion/resize and setting the height at 599 will ensure that every picture will upload as attachments -- providing the JPeG compresionis at 70 or less.

599 instead of 600, because every so often, Irfanview rounds up to 601 when set at 600 and Lit won't accept a height of 601 pixels.

Irfanview in perfect for quickie resizing.
The Paint suggestion will also work, but there's also the chance of messing up your image. Paint can be stubborn sometimes.

If you want to tinker with images without the price tag of Photshop, Serif makes a freebie "cousin" to it called Photoplus that I absolutely love. Pretty much all the features of Photoshop, but with no cost.

How To is a really slow forum, and generally has a week to ten days worth of threads in the forty most recently active.

It's very rare thread that makes it out of the first fifty or so and remains relevant to the original poster.
