Apparently just letting ads through now

I wonder if they tried playing with less moderation to work on cleaning up the backlog. If so, I guess that experiment failed. Unless the experiment is whether the user community will moderate it for them.

This, along with a story that’s literally blatant fascist propaganda posted in LW a couple of days ago, is making me question whether I want to keep posting here.
Nobody thought to ping that 'author' and bring them here? Or are they already here? I can envision a few here posting that kind of thing.

I had to report a very explicit snuff story last month.

It was, I believe, seven years old at the time.

It was removed instantly. I mean, literally, before I could hit Back. The result is that I don't have the title or author.

The author of the racist material was bh76; has thousands of followers and some H ratings
When you think too of how people who make racist comments on PB react when people disagree - I don’t think he’s gonna give a shit, and I see little value
But by all means do if you think otherwise

That actually kind of worries me a bit. I mean, it's good that the story's gone. But the idea that one report can cause a piece to be instantly removed seems abusable. Hopefully it's just that the story was submitted before whatever content-moderation tools in use now were implemented, the report caused the story to be re-evaluated automatically and it failed the moderation test.

So far as I'm aware, a reported story gets taken down, then goes through the same process as any new story. Whether or not it automatically gets referred back to the author I don't know, not these days.

In the past, it would be handled like a rejection, with the author given a chance to fix it. If the author did nothing, the story would stay down, no further action taken.

A story like that stayed up for years, and the one discussed earlier did for however long, and you’re worrying that reporting leads to removal? Priorities much…?

Yes, actually; I am slightly worried if one report can lead to a story being taken down instantly without review, as TWG-Annie suggested happened.

I believe it happened to @Kelliezgirl earlier this year. If I remember rightly she got it back up pretty quickly with all of it's stats still intact, but with a shiny orange new badge and showing up amongst the new stories.

That's exactly what happens - if a story gets reported, it gets taken down, and is referred back to the author to fix or to argue their case.

If the author does something about the content which is acceptable, or argues their case, the story goes back up. If the author does nothing, the story stays down.

The site uses the Report function as part of community self-moderation. Some folk say, "Oh no, I wouldn't never report a story, that's doing the site's job for them," while others say, "Fuck that, that one crept through, and I don't want that content matter around my stories."

That's why the Report function exists.
