Agreed, cut off the supply and provide treatment. Unfortunately for many jail is the first stop before treatment.It worked to a certain degree. We eliminated many drug labs which was the intended goal.
We used half measures at home. Consumption, drug rehab centers and mental health hospitals, stiffening statutory penalties for drug pushers. Cutting off the supply is a big step forward, prosecuting drug users is the wrong approach unless that drug user is a pusher.
Street price for Fentanyl has doubled over the past 10 months. It hasn't been determined whether that is due to supply being choked or just inflation. The Feds are hopeful that it's supply being choked off, hopeful being the operative word there. That is not necessarily good news in the short term. As the price increases the seriously addicted are going to engage in riskier behavior to get the money for their habit.
