Does Marilyn Evergreen sound stupid to you?

Well, to summarize, I'm writing a story game set at the Midwest Central University (MCU, yeah, I notice it), a fictional college with US vibes but with no clear localization, and I was thinking of calling Marilyn Evergreen the founder of the college. I was trying to go with something that sounds rich and posh, but I don't know if it sounds weird or too stupid, because I'm not a native speaker, and those kinds of things are very hard to notice without a closer background to the language.

I'll appreciate any advice, comment, or opinion about the name or recommendations if it's too bad. (By the way, the story has a lot of smut and comedy, so if it's weird but not to the level of taking people out the story by being too much, it would be fine.)

Hmm... It's not bad, though it sounds a bit fantastical... Kinda stereotipically Elvish, Sylvan, Fae... Assuming fantasy, Marilyn Evergreen is more suited for a stern headmistress for a magic school to me, regardless as to the flavor of fantasy; it even fits perfectly with urban fantasy.

If I was you and I wasn't too convinced as well, I would pin that name and try different ones. If nothing comes up, then I go with it.

Now if you're seeeking a more dark academia vibe for MCU, try going to Europe during the Enlightment period, or even the Renaissance. Gothic-sounding names (as in gothic horror, not the Goth civilization) are a good fit for academia.

Regardless of your choosing, your writing is valid, name your characters however you want.

Sounds fine to me. I don't think it's important whether many Evergreens actually exist. It sounds like a legitimate name, and that's enough. If you like it, go with it.

Would a college or university in the midwest be named after a woman when this school was formed? Does that matter to your story?

Marylin McKenzie?

Marilyn Evergreen sounds like a dyke of a woman that would block canals.

I think it would suit the story fine. As others say, unusual names can feel rich. It can be in part because rich people are more likely to make their own name to trade on. It makes them mysterious, exotic, and stay in the mind. For English readers in an American setting it can thus greatly help to go for foreign names. The Dutch names are thus great. It helps that they aren't enemies of America either (one could argue about America's stance these days, but let's not). There's a lot of "multi surnames" like the suggested Vanderpol which in Dutch would actually be van der Pol. Another great starting point.

That being said, you're spanish. You could go for a spanish surname and you can probably sell it as the American dream come true.

Maybe it is not that important. The matter is that I want to turn the MCU into a recurrent localization. I mention it in my first story game (and there is a branch that occurs there, although I didn't give personality to the place). In the one that I'm writing now, almost all action occurs there, so I was trying to make it feel more like a real place, so there is this main square with the statue, and I was thinking of naming some hall or library. It's more a world-building matter than a key piece in the story.

I wouldn’t go with Marilyn Evergreen purely because of how it sounds.

It has a kind of jarring, rhythmic resonance to it, caused by the fact that both words consist of two and a half syllables with the exact same corresponding lengths, and the final ones are almost identical (-yn vs. -een). This makes the name sound almost comical when spoken out loud.

Compare it to this suggestion:
Marylin McKenzie?
which has neither of those problems while preserving the fancy first name.

So, it appears the consensus is that to properly portray your mc as a posh American, you should make them identify as European.

The more people object to the name , the more I like it.

Fuck Europe.

'Murica has more that enough stuffy Hos to make a story out of. We dun growed plenty of our own.
