I want to write

I usually start by getting a set of ideas down on paper, and then linking them together into a rough storyboard. There will be a couple of rounds of tweaking, if only to make sure the story flows. Then each of the ideas becomes like a metaphorical chapter in my writing, as I pad them out. At this time I'm not so worried about precise accuracy and continuity. It is more about going from idea to story. The rest comes in several rounds of editing where I start to consider how the story flows and whether the reader will find it both realistic and appealing.

It's just like when you had to write stories at school only, you don't get told off for writing a sex scene or two.

First, I start with creating a main character, perhaps a shy virgin or a middle-aged slapper. Then, I created a few support characters that'll encourage them in the right direction.

Everyone has sex, so what makes this occasion more interesting? Is it with someone they shouldn't be? Are they looking to experience something new? Are they being coerced into it?

Finally, your main character has a jolly good game of hide the sausage. Site rules state they have to enjoy it, so chuck in an orgasm to keep it legal.

I want to write a story, but I don't know were to start. Please help me out.

How much do you read? Not just here, but elsewhere (non-smut). Reading helps a lot, to see how established writers lay out their stories.

Seek out online writing communities, again, not just here but in the non-smut world. As far as this site is concerned, there are threads here in the forum where Literotica writers share their tips.

Here is an good thread for self editing: https://forum.literotica.com/threads/self-editing-for-authors.1634588/

Then there is this section in the main page: https://www.literotica.com/resources/writer-resources

And then there is this "How-to" section here: https://www.literotica.com/c/adult-how-to

For the last link, there are quite a variety of articles in there, some on writing, others about other things.

Did I just give you a bunch of homework? YES. :) Sorry about that, but there is a lot to learn about crafting a story. Some of the knowledge you will need to absorb simply revolves around how to write a story, any story. Then, learning to write erotica so it's interesting to potential readers is another thing to absorb.

I was in a big hurry to get my first story out and it showed. It has a bunch of technical errors and word choices I wish now I hadn't made. I finally re-edited it and its been submitted for upload. No telling when it will finally be added as edits to stories are low on the priority list.

I hope that helps you without giving you too much to consider. Personally, I think it's worth putting in the work. No one is going to pop out a brilliant piece of literature on their first attempt. It takes practice and the ability/willingness to learn from others successes and mistakes.

Dirk

PS - Don't rely on Artificial Intelligence!!! At best, its a short cut, and no one will respect you for it. But more likely, it will be crap. The site here has rules against AI and won't post your story if they even think it might be AI crafted.

So… you can’t just say, ‘I wanna write a story.’

You need to know at least one of:

  1. What is the story about?
  2. Who is the main character, and what are they like?
  3. What is the broad outline of what happens?
  4. How does the story end?
  5. Is there some killer idea or scene which centers the whole thing?
You don’t have to know all of these, I’ve started different stories with just one of the above items in mind. But you have to have something.

So I’d focus on the above. Assuming it’s an erotic story (see that URL up there?) you also might like to think about:

  1. What are your kinks?
  2. What kinks might readers be interested in?
  3. How is sex - or the lead up to it - going to contribute to the story?
Good luck!

I don't typically write stories, but the thing that helps me when I get stuck writing for work is talking it out loud. Pick a topic, or a person, and just start talking it through. Then go back and write some notes, see if that sparks something for you.

If you are looking to write erotic stories, I highly recommend the book How to Write Erotica by Rachel Kramer Bussel.

I'm going to disagree with everything that my esteemed colleagues have advised above, and tell you to just start writing.

You can think about writing all you want, you can plot and plan and outline and research and consider POV and tense and everything. But that's all just putting off the moment when you write the first word, and the first sentence, and the first paragraph.

It might not be any good. In fact, as most writers will tell you, your first attempt is generally pretty bad. Everyone's is. But the second time it gets easier. And the third time, and the fourth.

Don't shoot for the moon when you start. Write a single sex scene - or even a sexless scene - of a few hundred words. Don't even start by trying to write a novel, or even a novella. You'll run out of steam before you've written a page, and that will leave you frustrated.

Instead just write something with a beginning, a middle and an end. Or not even that: check out the Writing Exercises in the Authors' Hangout for some prompts and the snippets that other writers came up with. With most of them, you can write your own snippet in the thread and get some feedback.

Find something that triggers your imagination and write it down. Writing is a skill that you can practise. The more you do it, the better you'll get. And the more you do it, the more stamina you'll have as well.

Good luck!

@EmilyMiller has hit the post with perfection.

You want to write. That is the starting point.

Take the advice on here as a starting point. Whatever you write as a first story, have this one point in mind: do not compare your first piece with anyone else’s. Your first story will be wrought with all manner of difficulties.

@ericalauren made a good suggestion: read an established ‘how to’ book.

Your story is your story. Your writing process will be yours and yours alone. What works for you, will work for you and it may not work for anyone else. That’s not to sound conceited.

Take your time. Read on the boards as well for good advice. As a solid piece of advice, I’ll echo a sentiment, do not use or rely on AI.
