We're talking C18th here and it's documented history using the language of the day. Most of the New England settlers were quite happy until those agitators started their insurgency.

I know, but it was used till the 19th as a slur and then usually not anymore. Irish nationalism/republicanism would be a more neutral wording.

That's what the reference book named them and it was  their hatred of the English that drove their actions. Same with the French.
