I was reminded earlier today of two fascinating stories, each similar to the other - though one is fictional and the other real.
In the first, a member of the anti-fascist resistance chickens out of a plot to murder Mussolini and instead informs the police of his group's plans. When his fellow conspirators discover this, he agrees that he deserves to be killed by them - which they do - but they arrange it so that it seems he was murdered by fascists, thus ensuring he becomes a martyr to their cause. It's a film called The Spider's Stratagem.
In the second story, which is true - a street fighter called Maikovski, who beats up and occasionally murders communists, is shot one night while agitating for trouble in a particularly 'red' part of town. Alongside him is a policeman, Josef Zauritz, who is gunned down with him. They both die in hospital that night. An enormous hunt ensues for the murderer; a noted communist called Carius cannot be found, having gone to ground. Maikovski's funeral is made into a deliberately huge affair, taking place in the main Cathedral, and he thus becomes a famous martyr to the nationalist movement.
Hitler, Goebbels and Goring all attend and lay wreaths at his coffin - though of course it is Goebbels himself who had paid one of Maikovski's fellow Stormtroopers to wipe him out.
And this got me thinking. Just how far would you go to besmirch your political opponents and become a hero to your own side?
What's your membership level:
Blue: This is a nasty business, I strongly disapprove and I'd dissuade others from doing it.
Silver: I'm down with this stuff but too chicken to take part myself.
Gold: Yes, I'd murder a friend to make them a hero and make it look like the other side did it.
Platinum: I'm willing to be murdered to become a martyr for the MAGA/Antifa cause (delete as necessary).
