The 50 Plus Cafe, Pub, All-Nite Greasy Spoon and Dive Bar

today was whacky. Not in a good way.

Visited a friend of mine who’s in the hospital. That was sad enough. He is ravaged by MS.

But when we got back home and ready to work at the farm, we got word that a friend of our died.

He died doing what he loved.

He was an ace mechanic and machinist. He could do anything, build anything, get any motor started, figure out a way to do just about anything mechanical. He was 80 years old and didn’t let anything get in his way.

He took one of my neighbors kids under his wing and taught him how to fly. (He was also a pilot)

He was old school AND new school. He was gruff and also friendly. A mentor to many people. He didn’t suffer fools and he also had a heart as big as a house. He programmed his entire house, loved old technology and new technology. He was a doer and did his best thinking on his feet.

He designed and was building a solar kiln for drying wood. This weekend, i was literally gonna get some cherry slabbed at the local sawmill and then bring it to him to get kiln dried.

He was a helluva guy. And I will miss the hell out of him.

Then someone “bought” $30 of pumpkins and left $5. It happens sometimes and 3/4 of the time someone will leave an iou or come back and put the extra money in the box a few days later. Fingers are crossed. It’s not a lot of bread but it ain’t nothing either.

I guess it pales in comparison to losing a loved one.

My one buddy am a barely move and is my age. My other buddy died at 80 and was as sory as a cat.

Life is weird sometimes.
I am very sorry for your loss.

Good morning denizens of the greasy spoon.

Woke up to disturbing news where a mass shooting at a church just north of me. Very little is known about the motive.

On a better note, I had brunch with a group of other WIDs and welcomed 2 new members. We know how difficult it is to meet strangers but we try to make them feel welcome and inclusive. It makes me feel productive and helpful.

TS Imelda looks like she’s going to head out to sea so all the finger crossing worked. It’s been raining on and off so we’ll get that all day, but honestly we needed it. No rain in almost 40 days.

Hope everyone has a great start to the week. We wont mention the M word.

@Wonderer67 , so sorry for your loss my friend. Prayers out to y’all. What did your friend fly if I may ask?

We have a another week of official Oktoberfest…the MZ will reflect:

I make good casseroles, cornbread, follow-the-mix stuff, and damned fine CC cookies. I can follow a recipe.
I can’t seem to get enough cornbread lately. Wish I knew some good casseroles - cacciatores. Anyone share stuff on

I’d like some new stuff to try. I mostly spend time getting texture and level of doneness right on the grill. I have 3. A gas and 18” Weber on my deck outside the kitchen and a 22” underneath. I use those year round and have them undercover so I and they stay out of the rain while in use. I make great tomato gravy but the secret is in the sausage I found at this one store all the way into Arlington.

Trying to lose weight I kept hearing older people say the secret to long life is eating more beans. Turns out they are more carb than protein. I have found an endless supply of 3 bean dressings to make from ChatGPT. Other flavors and brine methods there too. Even some interesting things to try with the sous vide.

We did the same… I found some old stewing meat. It’s been in there for at least a year.

Bought it back when beef was cheap! 😂

Made a nice Asian style beef stir fry last night.
Yea. The freezers here have dates in them that are proof that time really does fly. I double seal the bags when I vacuum them with the food saver. I haven’t pulled out much that was not good. Only a pork tenderloin that I may have froze because it was on its last day. I could smell it as it thawed without even opening that bag. I’ve been pretty serious about eating from the freezer lately. Still have to go to the store for veggies.

There were discussions a while ago that mentioned a thread by @Photog1rl called "Chaos in the Kitchen - what to eat and drink"

We've also had folks share some recipes on this thread. Try searching for "recipe"?? I've got many of them bookmarked but no great way to collate or share the bookmarks. Open to suggestions.

Mirning

I have a 1:1 with my boss... why i dont know she is leaving in a couple weeks

I also have an ultrasound at 545 tonight. I did not plan well... i cant eat ot drink for 8 hrs before....oops
Ugh…I hate the procedures where you can’t eat or drink. I’ve been going through this also. I was going to come on here and try and motivate my virtual walking buddy, but your plate is full. I’ll try again when you’re feeling better.
